I think that speaks to how low a bar we set for politicians - that we are possibly ok with a little bit of (alleged) corruption as long as they are getting things done and are reasonably effective at running their government.

The decision to not only resign as Premier but from Parliament entirely seems like a fairly extreme move. It will be very interesting to see what the outcome of the ICAC investigations are.

The key word there being "alleged" corruption. She has not yet been found guilty of anything.

There is no allegation that she received a personal benefit from the grants she backed - that has never been the issue.

There is also no allegation that the grant recipients were unworthy of the grants they received - my understanding is that they were legitimate recipients.

The question is whether Gladys had a conflict of interest (and more importantly - failed to disclose it) - and so did not act in the best interest of the other grant applicants and the taxpayers whose funds she was granting.

Gladys has always held that politicians cannot hold an official position while being investigated by ICAC - so she would have at minimum stepped aside as Premier while the investigation was completed.

The problem is that these things can take years to go through their due process - at which point there would be no point trying to reassume the leadership, even if cleared of any wrongdoing.

Right now, we are still dealing with a pandemic - and there needs to be clear leadership to carry us forward, so she had no choice but to resign as Premier so we could have a new leader elected to carry on.

Given everything she has been through since the bushfires in 2019/20 and then the pandemic - I'm sure she is exhausted and could do with a break. Rather than sitting as a lame duck on the parliament back-bench, I'm sure she just wants a rest. It is difficult enough managing a pandemic let along fighting corruption allegations at the same time.

From what I've read of the situation (while acknowledging that we aren't yet aware of the outcome of the investigation) - I'm more inclined to label the whole situation as an "error of judgement" rather than as "corruption for personal gain" (aka "graft"). Yes, she needs to be held accountable for those errors - but it's hardly the same thing as some of the other stuff that has gone on in politics in recent years (eg SA expense claims).

Of course, if the investigation uncovers evidence that she personally benefited from these grants being issued, then I would expect her to be charged and legal proceedings undertaken. I would be surprised and disappointed if that did turn out to be the case.

My guess is that Gladys had a private briefing with ICAC prior to resigning.

I suspect that once she found out what evidence ICAC has, she decided on the course of action she took.

All will be revealed in the fullness of time.

If that's the case then it must be pretty bad. It could be the tip of the iceberg.

Yes, and she is absolutely entitled to the presumption of innocence.

A personal benefit and a benefit for a friend/family member/partner are not that different. Private interest is the key test and is what's referred to in the ICAC press release.

In 2019 she cut the budget of Fire and Rescue by 35% ($28.5 mill) and the Rural Fire Service budget by 75% ($49.9 million). There were also budget cuts to the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service who do controlled reduction burns.

Are these politicians as principled and 'heroic' as suggested, or self serving?

Why not be around for the great state opening on Oct 11.

Why not stand in the reflected glory of that major achievement.

Maybe it's a *********** and no one wants to own it.

What does Kerry Chant think of all this?

I suspect that is why Gladys resigned, instead of standing aside.

She didn’t want JB to be Acting-Premier?

He's going to look very shifty if there's 'more' than just this.
I suspect it's a bunch of them saying they can't work with the Parrot.

My gut feel there is more to come of this including the "alleged" involvement of Bruz in setting a terrorism unit on a comedic producer.

And of course his upcoming court case against Friendly Jordies and youtube.
