    Hi guys

Got a home with a pit in the garage, with no lid on it, so its potentially dangerous if tenants or their children fall into it.

Any of you have one at home? eg mechanics or tradies etc.

Looking for a cost effective method to cover it up. Tried finding lids everywhere and haven't really been able to. One of our handymans offered to custom make one, or another option might be to fill it in with sand / rubble.

    Any other suggestions?

My uncle's garage had a pit in it - there was a lip in the concrete along the edge where you could lay wooden planks across it ... the lip was just deep enough to fit the planks so it was pretty much flush with the floor.

I wonder if my landlord client would approve a $100k elevator so the tenants cars can park on both levels :p :D

Yeah i've seen ones like that, this one doesnt have a lip though. I'll see if i can upload a photo.

Yeah my great-uncle's garage had a pit with wooden sleepers over it.
Check the legalities surrounding pits, if you're going to leave it accessible. It's now considered a confined space iirc, and needs air extraction (carbon monoxide, for example).

Might need a damn good filtration system for the oil and brake dust.

perfect for a serial killer - just add some acid and they are good to go.

Probably not the tenant you are wanting to attract though.........

I would get a structual pine frame popped in the pit then cover with 17mm formply, bolted to the concrete.

I would look at just getting a thick Ali (5/7mm) sheet and putting it over the top. You could even attach some hinges to keep it fixed in place and accessible.

    Cheap, quick and easy.

I would also only make it temporary, as in @DaveM or @Blacky suggestion above, wouldn't cost much, and at some point, someone might actually want a home with one, who knows.

Yep just need to ensure it can bear the weight of a car wheel in case someone drives on it. Ensure its supported from underneath
