We encourage people to respond publicly rather than privately. In this way everybody learns, not just one person.

Whenever anyone asks about finding a mentor I point them at this post from Somersoft legend "The Wife" in the "Teach us to fish" thread: teach us to fish

Possibly, but action is what counts at the end of the day.
Learning how to learn is a fundamental skill and I personally don't believe a mentor is needed until you're well on your way to success.
    Each to their own.
This would be my advice to myself when starting a decade ago.

Very good question, lining up with someone that you have the same views is important. however finding a person that allows you to have full control is critical. so the best place is talking to past clients, that way you can confirm any statements made. online is one way, talk to the personal inner circles. Just remember the process and product of this industry changes all the time, so make sure the person is a complete independent with experience across the board. my suggestion is to have a few in different fields.

If everybody learned on their own, everyone would be learning the same things over and over and we would not have a computer in our pocket all the time where we can talk to and see any other person anywhere in the world at any time. That comes from standing on the shoulders of others before us.

Yes learning to learn is a good skill.
Having the opportunity to learn from others and be a lifetime ahead in knowledge and understanding is also pretty damn important.

And the fastest most efficient way to do this is online, in my opinion.

Why have one mentor when you can have thousands in an instant.

    YouTube and forums FTW !
