That electrician should hand his licence in.

I'm not really sure what you're getting at. Main earth bashed into the ground at the switchboard (or close enough) to switchboard. Main earth inside switchboard to water pipes.

In old houses the water pipes were the main earth.

True but they didn't have/weren't required to tie the neutral to earth so there could be a potential difference between earth and neutral.

earth clips used to be installed on copper water pipes

any renovations or repairs with newer style pex pipes means the system may not be grounded

    call your supplier

I have had the exact same thing happen with one of my properties. Faulty earth was the problem.

Thank you Perthguy and thank you for the Endeavor Energy tip. I had been getting dreadful shocks from my removal-able shower head and taps every time it rained. I thought it was a grounding issue from google searches then found this chat link. Previously I called an electrician from a respectable firm and was quoted for renewing the grounding and putting in newer safety switches in my box. All up it was going to cost me around $3000. Saw this chat and called Endeavor Energy and they came out straight away and fixed the problem. The problem was in the street, not my box or my property or my grounding. They were quite surprised no one else in the street had called them as they said all my neighbors would have being experiencing the same problem. (I knew my next door neighbor was) They told me paying an electrician to re-earth would not have fixed my problem. So, folks, I recommend when you have any tingling in the shower that the first thing you do should be to call your electrical supplier. Mine turned out to be Endeavor Energy. It didn't cost a cent.
