My daughter is interested in setting up a drafting service. Can anyone advise me what is involved. Tafe college? how many years? are there any online courses you can do? Night school? She is at home with two small children but looking ahead to what she can take on when they are off to kindy etc. Any help you could give would be appreciated

TAFE definitely, but that's probably a 2 year full time course. She would then need some experience with a builder in order to learn the specifics. They don't always teach everything you need to know at TAFE.

TAFE then registration through Building Commission as a building practitioner. Highly competitive market

Why does she need to be registered?

Very competitive. Rates can be cut throat. Easier to start with carports, fences and additions but generally dealing with people who are only available after hours and lots of time to measure etc.

CAD package makes all the difference. AutoCAD can be cheap but Revit and ArchiCAD will save you time in the long run.

I did TAFE Building Design and Technology (WA). That's a CertIV Resi Drafting and Diploma in one.

    That led to Architecture.

Experience is the key. Get under structures and look and learn. Grab a white card and badger a builder to look around.

All parties involved in the building process must be registered in Vic. Registration includes Prof Indemnity insurance. Drawing can still be done without registration, but someone registered needs to take responsibility for the documents

Thanks for the explanation - Vic just loves their regulations, don't they?
