Should there be uniform DST around Australia?

  1. Yes

  2. No (it confuses the cows)

  3. No but SEQ & some of WA should

  4. No (it fades the curtains)

Pretty self-explanatory really, are you in favour of DST, should it be uniform around the country, should the areas like SEQ or below the tropic of Capricorn have it.

Granted that the day's length doesn't get much longer the further north you travel so it's of limited benefit to Darwin or Cairns etc but Brisvegas could do with it IMHO.

    Linky

Is there any benefit eg getting up a little later while it's still cool, not having to turn on the AC until later, enjoying a little more sunlight when you get home, contribute to your well-being or does it make the day hotter, contribute to glowball warming, confuses the farmers (who work to a clock rather than the seasons)?

PS: it kicks off this Sunday, wind those clocks forward an hour.

There's another option being proposed in Europe - that they run on daylight saving all year, which means that there's no twice yearly time changes.

I read recently that accidents and heart attacks go up a reasonable amount immediately following the day when daylight saving starts, and down when it finishes.

It's spring, lots of winter babies are also a side effect of DST. :p

I don't know how you judge that Brisbane could benefit?

Kids coming out from school at what really is 2pm in stinking hot weather is just unnecessary. We've got enough problems with skin cancer already without putting them into the sun for an extra hour of sun through summer.

We just don't need the extra daylight from Brisbane upwards.

I hated it when it trialled here when we had little kids, but with grown kids, I couldn't care about whether it comes in or not.

The jokes about cows and curtains are getting a bit old too - might have been funny 30 years ago but getting pretty boring now - perhaps find some new material?

Blame the SMH journo for bringing those ones up. As I point out, it's the farmers who are creatures of habit, 5am starts rain, hail, shine or DST. Would anyone notice the difference if they started at 6.00 am? Will the milk processors go broke?

Just think of the benefits, an extra hours rent, one hour less interest on a loan. Woo hoo!

Those sort of accidents are much more likely to occur when you have an extra hour in bed.

How about a poll without the sarcasm?

I won’t vote as there is no choice I agree with. No need for daylight savings in Qld.

At least we got to vote on it. It would be interesting to have a vote in the other states to see how popular it really is outside the capital cities.

Essential for us southern states - but fully understand why the northern don't like/want it.

Personally I'm getting a little weary of it being bright daylight at 5.30am, when I don't have to get up until 7am (living on the farm I don't have curtains to impede the view) - and then dark again at 6pm

This daylite saving is a real shocker. It's discriminatory against bogans. They get penalised from Centrelink for being late for appointments and "work for the dole". Fair go, bogans don't like change.......their brain's are too rattled to adjust.

25 million people and three time zones (five different times with daylight savings).

Maybe there should be two time zones. One for Western Australia and one for the rest. Daylight saving time should be abolished. SA and NT adopt time of eastern seaboard and those states that currently have daylight savings move clocks forward half an hour and those who don't move them back half an hour to meet half way. This re-sets the new time irrespective of the time of year. WA to be two hours behind the rest of Australia irrespective of the time of the year

Perth is in the same time zone as Beijing, Hong Kong and Singapore.

    How awesome is that!

She did. Out for a loooong bushwalk this morning.

Lil No Mates wasn't too happy about being woken up at 5.30am to head out.

I HATE dark evenings. We were going to move from UK to Brisbane until we found out no DST so we switched to Melbourne. I don't care what time it gets light on a morning, I start work early so it's always dark all year for me, but I like to get things done after work, I like being outdoors after work, cycling, running, working on and around the house etc. Winter's terrible when you get home from work and it's dark already before you get home, cant get anything done. Just hibernate until spring.

I'm not much of an outdoor activity person (except for the garden), but I don't like the dark evenings either.

I lived in a place where it was spring weather all year round. Which was great. Except that it was dark at around 6 pm. All year round.
