Brazilian President tells citizens to 'stop whining' as COVID deaths hit record highs

Brazil's President Jair Bolsanaro has told citizens to "stop whining" about the pandemic — despite the nation recording two straight days of record deaths from COVID-19.

The President has also spoken about the urgency to lift restrictions.

Almost 1,800 people died on Friday, taking Brazil's total death toll over 262,000 — the second highest in the world after the US.

The South American nation has registered nearly 10.9 million COVID-19 cases.

    ...

Personally, I think the citizens have quite a lot to whine about.

One year ago today lock down started here, didn't expect we'd still be going 12 months later. At least its much freer now, nothing like the first 3 months. Allowed outside the city within Catalonia from next Monday. Shopping malls reopened last week, a lot of the shops didn't make it though and are permanently closed. Still a night curfew for a few more months, and masks everywhere probably the rest of the year.

It wasn't all lockdown, last July and August were open, hence second wave twice as big. Christmas caused doozy third wave 3 times as big. Easter travel banned, hopefully delay the inevitable fourth wave, hope they can hold it off until later in the year, after summer at least, get some holidays and some tourist rentals. Maybe vax will help.

I had a heads up from my mum the other day - linky...

Looks like cases are increasing with our nearest neighbour PNG. Poor testing regime is hiding the true level of infection.

No idea when they're getting access to vaccines either for frontline workers or anyone else.

Hopefully Aus helps them out once we start manufacturing locally.

I gather they're getting vaccines from China ... as much as I'd like to think it was simply a humane act, I suspect there is political motivation behind who China are sharing vaccines with

I heard that the 8000 doses have arrived in PNG.

There is resistance even with the Health Care Workers getting the AZ jab even though the positive tests are coming back as high as 70%

They're taking a bet that the members who catch Covid-19 won't survive and be members for long.

    • In England, more than 40,600 people have been likely infected with coronavirus while being treated in hospital for another reason, raising concerns about the NHS’s inability to protect them. The UK’s emergency coronavirus rules will continue for another six months.
    • Colombia has approved emergency use of Johnson & Johnson’s one-shot Covid-19 vaccine. The country has recorded over 2.35m cases of coronavirus and more than 62,500 deaths. It has administered more than 1.38m vaccine doses.
    • Joe Biden has doubled his vaccine goal in his first 100 days in office, saying he wants 200m jabs to be administered in that time.
    • EU leaders appear to have given a luke-warm response to plans by the European Commission to potentially block vaccine exports to highly vaccinated countries. In a statement issued after the EU virtual summit, the leaders failed to offer their support for the commission approach, instead saying they blacked “global value chains” and reaffirmed that “companies must ensure predictability of their vaccine production and respect contractual delivery deadlines.”
    • Brazil has recorded more than 100,000 daily coronavirus cases and nearly 3,000 daily deaths, as the Covid crisis continues to escalate.
    • Mexico’s Covid-19 death toll topped 200,000 on Thursday, making it the third country in the world to reach the devastating milestone as the country struggles with its vaccination rollout.

Israel has now administered about 115 doses of the vaccine for every 100 people (two jabs are needed).

The results? Perhaps not conclusive, but promising.

    An update from JHU:

    World: 130M/2.8M
    US: 30.6M/0.55M

It appears to have slowed (in the US but not elsewhere which are still in lockdowns).
