Hi all, Wondering what your thoughts are for the quote I have got to replace a broken shower tap (the thing you turn - the plumbing is fine). "Replace 2 shower taps $160 labour $75 if only 1 shower tap requires replacing we will reduce invoice accordingly" Total $235. Seems a bit steep to me? It's a 10min job, max.. I've done plenty. The quote is also for them to rehang a couple of shelves that have come off the walls due to weight of items placed on them - quoted $75 to rehang 2 shelves.
for the shower labour $120, cost of taps depends on quality of the taps cheap/expensive. for the shelves $75 sounds reasonable. If the $75 is incl in Total "235" i think it's very reasonable
Nah the $75 is additional. $310 total. No idea on the type of taps they are supplying.. waiting on a reply. I suspect cheap.
Why is the same trade doing shelves and taps- it's a plumber right? Whether a Handyman knows how to replace taps or not, they're not insured for it. The cost for the taps depends on what taps they used, like @Elives said.
Yep, sure. This 10 mins would be if you had the taps in the shed and are sitting in the lounge room. Don't forget they have to get the taps, drive to your place (unless working on a job next door), complete invoice, etc. Have you any thoughts on what would sound a reasonable price for the job?
No, the PM is using a handyman. Not sure about insurance, will enquire. Yeh fair enough. They are a very local handyman, so I would have thought a bit cheaper. Taps $30 Labour $75 Getting taps from Bunnings 4mins away $50. All a learning process for me.
I have a great story about a well known Handyman in Ipswich who buggered up a washer replacement (who knows how...) in a property on an upstairs tap. It flooded the property while the tenant was away and caused a significant insurance claim that was declined on the basis that the Handyman was not a plumber. Most good Handymen wont touch any plumbing work for that reason. It's HIGHLY unlikely that you'll have problems but just keep it in mind.
Hubby always love ALN After Lunch Nap. But yesterday after lunch he said he'd duck out to one of our Units, and "be back in 5". 45 minutes later,he came back red-faced and picked-up more tools. I dare not say a word. I think he finished the job after another 30 minutes at least. This is the second time this week. I need to say that I think hubby is quite a clever man (hence I married him). And he must be very confident to do these before his ALN. It just goes to show that in this kind of jobs, there's not much money to be gained when you look at this on a weekly or monthly basis. We are fortunate that we are onsite and didn't mind doing it for our own properties. It's a thankless, love job. Just go to Bunning's down the plumbing aisle and see the number of parts and tools there. There's quarter-turn brass plastic ....Someone might replace for half the price and lasts half the time, but there's never a guarantee. On another note, BIL spent weeks on a computer problem (he's quite a geek) and finally gave in, called someone in and got fixed in 2 minutes. He gladly paid hundred over dollars. Is it fair?
Thanks for all the replies. For anyone interested.. I ended up buying the taps myself and sending them to the property, for a tradie to install. Saved me ~$120. Did a similar thing for another small issue on my other property at the same time and saved $105. 25mins of my time saved $225, and the tenants end up with the same result.
put a ad up on gumtree or hipages, $100 labour plus materials, for the job you;ll get enough replies depending on wher the IP is obviously a lot more stuffing around, but youve just saved your self $150+
FWIW, in Qld at least, handymen can change washers but not taps. Insurance should be ok for in scope works. Plumbing laws | Your rights, crime and the law | Queensland Government Probably has a minimum call out fee so even if it's a 10 min job min charge would more than likely be an hrs labour. If you're paying for an hr just give them other jobs to do around the place.
If the person you find on Gumtree is not a licensed and insured Plumber, you open yourself to liability issues.
