I have a garage that I have to clear to make way for a granny flat. (sydney)
It does contain asbestos and is approx a 1.5 car length garage.

What would be the approximate costs of removal? Would I have to bend over because it contains asbestos?

Might i suggest that you call 2 licensed bonded asbestos removalists for a quote?

That way you'll have a fair idea and get it done before the demo works commence. The builder may otherwise leave you with a contaminated site & future health issuses if they don't follow the correct procedures.

It will prob feel that way.

If you have the time and don't mind getting your hands dirty you could possibly save quite a bit on labour costs with diy (consider your risk, costs of required materials, disposal, time etc).

Lots of web info but this is a start - Disposal & Legalities | Asbestos Awareness

You can either do runs to the disposal site yourself or get an asbestos skip bin Google

Pretty sure you can only legally remove 10m2 yourself? Could be hard to justify removing asbestos from a 1.5 car garage was less than that..

I think the cost we've paid for asbestos removal has been fair. Certainly no need to bend over. :p

Get a couple of quotes, get it done properly by professionals.

Nah, just turn on the sprinklers and knock it down yourself. Then spray the entire area in Clag glue and bundle the asbestos-gooey mess into black plastic bags. For final cleanup get a VAX and wet vaccum the rest of the mess and toss the vacuum with the rest of your waste. Job done! o_O :D

Actually, maybe just get a few quotes.. :)

Do it before you put a da in. You'll need to get a certificate of clearance if council notes it as to be demolished.

    Just more cash.

We are getting 20sqm removed (roofing) on the Central Coast. We have been quoted $990 + $275 for a clearance certificate, $890 (no mention of clearance certificate) and $2,282 (no mention of clearance certificate).

I considered doing it DIY but the two- three trips to the tip will cost $200 a pop (last I checked I could only do 6sqm?) and we don't know if the internal roof sheets as asbestos or not (which would add another 12 sqm), if they are he is covering it in the price.

Also need that clearance certificate for future DA

For the time, effort and cost with diy that seems a fair deal.

No need for DA to remove. Just be mindful that your asbestos crew need to notify neighbours of removal 5 days prior. PM if you need people for this.

I got a quote for my 30sqm garage with asbestos and 100 mm concrete along with a tin shed on concrete demolished and disposed off in $6000.
Not sure if the cheapest quote, but seems fair

I just had a backyard shed removed and also some flooring from inside the house. Was about $40 a square metre.
