It is often assumed or hoped that a hedge (plant) will grow fast and require little maintenance !
Am I the only one who see's the problem here  ?
Murraya (mock Orange) will grow quickly, but requires regular maintenance  .
Japanese box on the other hand requires very little maintenance, but will take 20 years to form a hedge o_O
Bunnings will sell you Murraya tube style stock from $3.95 thru to $120 for a 25lt bagged plant
Patience makes a true gardener :)

An example of this. About 6 weeks ago I bought some roses from the local nursery and planted them. A couple of days later we decided we needed one more, so bought one from Bunnings.

The nursery roses are bursting with new growth. The Bunnings one hasn't shown a single leaf. It still looks green, but that's about it.

A pic would make it easier to advise.
As for the hedge Photinia Robusta rubens is hardy fast growing, will add leaf cover to the ground and suitable for Canberra.
Blueberry Ash (Eaocarpis Reticulatis) and Magnolia little gem are other options.
