Heard on radio that the Chinese government was not going to allow Australian permanent residents of chinese extraction on the plane to Australia unless children were Australian nationals. Wow!

Think about how the Australian government would feel about another country coming in and 'evacuating' Australian citizens to another country.

It's not simply "Chinese extraction" - but rather Chinese citizens. Those who have not renounced their Chinese citizenship but have a permanent resident visa with Australia and travelled into China on their Chinese documentation.

    Shorty is right

The story was sparked by a video of a blogger eating bat soup. The video has since been claimed by the person who posted it to be completely unrelated to the current outbreak.
Coronavirus: Outrage over Chinese blogger eating 'bat soup' sparks apology

It's far more likely to have been caused by live animals, possibly in a market, than by consuming a cooked product imo.

Asian friends of mine have said that there has been a lot of anti Asian sentiment coming out in social media.

The bat story has been de-bunked. It might have come from bats, but the soup story is garbage.

Also, another example of top quality journalism on the issue: :D

Sources such as WHO and Australian Department of Health, which would also share information with one another. Not clickbaity news articles or twitter posts that just happened to be retweeted by thousands of people. So much misinformation and panic without looking at facts. "OMG someone ate bats and got the coronavirus" sounds exciting, doesn't matter if it's true or not...

Virus origin or not, that video was pretty gross. There's enough meat/livestock to go around, we don't need to broaden the fare to exotic animals.

Some things aren't suitable for human consumption. We don't need to stick everything that moves in our mouth.

That's the key takeaway from this pandemic (and SARS), perhaps even Ebola - but I guess people never learn.

So you have a list of what is and isn't ok to eat? Ever heard of mad cow disease, bird flu or swine flu (H1N1) ?

I disagree with that. Just because some news outlets are loose with the truth or deliberately publish factually incorrect or misleading information doesn't mean they all do. But it suits those rags to create the idea of fake news because it destroys the concepts of truth, credibility and fact.

Just need to be more selective in the sources of news and apply a bit of critical analysis.

There will always be exceptions or 's*** happens' but there's zero doubt that not adding exotic species to the menu (as well as obvious hygiene measures when it comes to dealing with animals) will reduce the chance of a pandemic.
