New house build is about to start next week, and I know some decisions are going to have to be made quickly - on the fly - so trying to get things sorted as early as possible.

We're looking at installing an Ikea kitchen ... but with Ikea being a 5 hour round trip, we'd really like to simply go down, buy the pre-decided base cabinets, look at the doors and choose at the time ... so I really need to have the kitchen laid out before we trundle off with our trailer.

I'm finding it hard to find to find somewhere on the website that confirms the base cabinets sizes - but think I got it right that they increase in increments of 200mm ... so ... 200 - 400 - 600 - 800 widths.

    Am I right?

p.s. wish they'd open an Ikea in Newcastle!

Try the online kitchen designer program.

They have a variety of base cabinets and not 200mm increments. They have a large selection of draws, wine shelf, sink bases. ..There's heaps

Every furniture in our home is from ikea. We initially chose online but when went down and looked at, we changed few items - some doesn't look the same. Delivery to Newcastle is pretty cheap $180 for the whole lot. I wished we got ikea here too but hubby won't buy again - it took him few weekends to assemble as I am a no helper...:p

Our sons have done a few Ikea kitchens and been happy with them. I'd give them a call Lizzie to confirm sizes but also because (in my experience) they don't always have everything. You can check availability online but they also will not hold anything, so if there are two pieces left that you need and they sell while you are driving there, you will have to make a second trip.

The last kitchen we helped our son to install (or should that be to "mantle" - opposite of dismantle :D), was interesting. I went with him to buy all the pieces and we ended up waiting for one of their kitchen specialists to run through it with us. That was well worth it, because they do it all day, and we would certainly have left things off that we really did need.

The specialist kitchen person filled in the order sheet and someone pulled out what we needed, so nothing was left off.

We still had to do two trips due to some things being out of stock, and I think we paid to have the bench tops delivered due to the length of them (but I'm not sure of that - maybe we got them with the trailer too - it is a couple of years ago now).

Yes, good point. I did mine online through their program and was going to just order it but i went in and they helped in store to check everything and add handles i missed and a few other bits.
I went and paid and then had to drive around the corner to find a heap of boxes waiting for me:eek:

I then realised i was in trouble! It's REALLY flat packed

Great idea to go in with a rough plan and have one of their kitchen people go over it. Might go down during the week, not so many people around. Junior starts school hols 2 weeks earlier than the pubic schools, so there'd be no rush to get back for school pickup (not anywhere near a bus route!).

We're not getting the benchtops from Ikea, but rather the butlers pantry and sink/cooktop bench in Paperock, solid black (samples look fantastic) - Paperock | A Strong, Sustainable & Smart Building Material - and the island bench we'll make ourselves, 1200 wide with waterfall edges, from laminated merbau panels that we'll limewash and seal - 1800 x 600 x 26mm Merbau FJ Laminated Panel

If you're going in take your plans and they'll be able to help you log in on the spot and plan it out. Grab a coffee and spend a couple of hours in there!
