The shadow I highlighted in blue is cast from the light at the top of the stairs (red arrow to red arrow)

@Big Daddy you're right, it's not legal to have it like that. At least if you were renting it out. If it's your PPOR.... ..yolo?

That would freak me out - I can't even see a handrail on the other side to cling to so you stay away from the death drop

From recollection that house has been for sale on and off or sold not that long ago. Let me go check old photos too

Rpdata confirms on and off listing for 482 days (eeek!) and a very clear photo of the stair well

Looks like I don't need to eat my hat after all?

And I spent all my time looking for recipes

I wasn't sure what sort of hat you preferred.

    Thank goodness for that.
And all those that booked optician appointments can now cancel them :)

And would you believe that that's not the original staircase?

I found some older photos of the house with a proper staircase :p

I wonder why they changed the staircase. Seems a big expense for just a different "vibe". And the floor has been changed too. Another big expense.

I don't like stairs without a handrail - it could potentially lead to an accident. And I would have thought that an invisible glass barrier would be quite dangerous. Especially if there were to be kids around.

The window alongside the staircase half way up may also be non-compliant. Windows have to be a specific height about treads to limit people putting legs and head etc through glass.

    Maybe laminate ?
