Interesting. Can you name any universities who interview rather than rely on marks and which degrees these kids are 'interviewing'
for ? I've never heard of this.

I think Monash(?) interviews for med degrees for the straight out of high school entrants, but last I heard they asked mostly technical (education-based) questions.

I think that is important. Nothing worse than trying to speak to a doctor with no interpersonal skills. Imagine them trying to break the bad news (even if its minor!)

I've heard of universities interviewing potential students with the same marks to determine which is better, but not of taking students with low scores based on an interview over students with the required ATAR. I'd be pretty ****** as a parent if one of my children with high ATAR got overlooked because someone who hadn't bothered to put the work simply 'interviewed well'. As far as I know, the reason so many doctors have poor bedside manner is that they simply got the marks to get do a medical degree, not because they have a particular interest in helping/healing people.

Correct. Or they did medicine because their parents want them to or in their mind, medicine is the best degree and title comes with privilege.

    Um

    "You have herpes"
    "You are dyeing"
"You broke 5 out of 5 bones"

How do you soften the blow on that?

You have had a lot fun haven't you?
You should spend more time with your family? Have you got a bucket list?
You're turning into wolverine and it's cool.

Its all in the tone / delivery.
No different than rapport building with real estate agents.
(Could you imagine how well the rapport you would have with agents if you acted like Sheldon Cooper (from Big Bang Theory) or Dr House (from House).

I'd rather have a doctor with a bad bedside manner who knew what he/she was doing than someone who had interviewed well and had a good bedside manner.

The main saying is "be a doctor, they earn lots of money!" Then I go to Australia, told them it's a 6 years degree, a hell of high grade to get in and $$$$$$ to pay for the degree, then you need to go for placements etc.

yeah but after placements etc and add 5 years - u're on good salary till the end of your career. I've got a few cousins who are doctors and dentists and you get a lot of tax breaks due to salary packagin as once u in that medical profession working for a hospital etc, even mortgage repayments, phone bills, food are pre-tax. Contrast that to accounting degree and the average pay over the life of your career it would not come close.

I don't have the right predisposition to be a doctor.
    "Doctor, I fell" *cry*
me: "Suck it up boy. Let me finish dressing it. I need to get out by 5pm"

Hospital work is not that glamorous.... terrible hours.

Both school which have been over subscribed for the past years and their boundaries are closing in.

Plenty of anecdotal evidence of families purchasing years ago and no longer being in the Catchment Zone.

Sydney Uni, NSW and Macquarie are the one that I deal with that no longer rely purely on marks. There may be others.

Most people want to give their kids the best start in life, us included. The problem I see with the 'tiger mum' (haven't heard that term before) approach is the lack of balance. We have a mix of sport, kumon tutoring, dancing and most importantly socialising with other kids and playing outside!

I have an old friend who is highly intelligent, holds a B of Adv. Science (hons), Master of Pharmacy and for whatever reason is halfway through a law degree now. His pharmacy businesses have either been mediocre or failed because he has zero people skills. All he ever did was study, nothing else, because this is what his parents pushed. He is also single, not interested in less educated/low social status people and can be quite arrogant.

His cousin completed the same Science degree, without honors, and now works in the field in a dual scientific/sales role. He has done exceptionally well and has been promised the GM position in his company when the current GM retires this year. He is a family man, friendly and approachable. His parents always encouraged activites and interests that would make him a well-rounded person.

Academic performance is important but it is only one part of the picture.
