I never heard them referred to as firemen they are usually called firies in Australia. So they get rid of Sam because he is male and replace him with 3 phallic mascots ! ?? Don't know why they cant just call it what it is firie Sam. PC madness.

Maybe because most HR jobs are not as highly paid as being a fire fighter?

It is relevant because you brought it up by saying that no one complains that there are more women in HR jobs than men (implying that no one should complain that there are more men in fire fighting roles).

She is urging Brits to show their support with the hashtag #firefightingsexism over concerns the term ‘fireman’ could put women off joining the service.

So the Female London Fire Chief said it "Could" put women off...
    It's an opinion piece... next.

Studies in Scandinavian countries, where they have tried to blur the lines between female and male roles in society more than anywhere else, have conclusively shown that the more that agenda gets pushed the more men and women gravitate to traditional male and female jobs. It's the exact opposite of what they expected to happen.

    Fascinating.

If we drifted towards traditional male and female roles, there would be no more female doctors or male nurses. When I was brought up, most women didn't have paid work. The small minority who worked were shop assistants, nurses or teachers. There were not many female accountants, lawyers, politicians, dentists, or many other occupations.

Regardless of the traditional roles - if the playing ground was equal, and everybody was encouraged to apply equally and be treated equally - if it turned out that 10% of firefighters were female instead of 5%, then firefighting would be better off, as that extra 5% replaced 5% of men who didn't make the grade.

Before WWII there weren't many women at work. Then during the war, the shortage of men made it necessary for women to take up occupations like bus driving or car mechanics. They did a good job, and expected that once the war finished, they would be allowed to continue in work that they were doing well. This didn't happen. The men came back, and women were once again excluded. But now, women knew that they were able to perform these jobs - and the push for change began.

My mother post war worked for the town council. She obtained a qualification as town clerk (now called general manager of the council I think). She was only the second woman in Victoria to receive that qualification. But when she got married, she was no longer allowed to work for the council. She was a very gifted lady, and would have done a fantastic job. The council lost a great asset. Years later, she was an equal partner in a business with my father - and she was really the driving force. She was one of the few working mothers in my school class. The business was very successful, and they retired at age 45. BTW, she was no feminist - just an ordinary person pushing gently against the boundaries in a society where tradition made things difficult.

Now there are many professions where there is no traditional male/female divide as there once was. Some still remain, but what we call "traditional" roles is different to what we called traditional roles a generation ago, and is likely to be different from a generation in the future.

Male dominated professions are not only hard for women to break into, they are difficult for women to remain in, due to the entrenched sexism and misogyny. My daughter is in construction management, and gets some pretty rough treatment. It's sometimes a really tough fight for her. There is no support from her own management, who appear to themselves have similar attitudes. She has seen a lot of barriers thrown up against women applying to enter the industry as apprentices, so that a much smaller percentage of female applicants gain apprenticeships than male.

A fair world would be one where anybody has the right to apply for any job they wish, being treated fairly when applying for that job, and treated equally when performing in that job.

If, after being treated equally, there is a smaller representation of women, then so be it.

Sweden is considered one of the most the most gender equal countries but there is still institutional sexism in some places as shown in the double blind study in this article:

Is the Gender Gap Solved in Liberal Sweden?

‘In a randomized double-blind study, two sets of identical application materials, with the only difference that half had a male name and the other half a female name, were sent out to over 100 faculty at research universities and presented as a student applying for a lab manager position. Results found that the female applicants were rated significantly lower than the males in competence, hire-ability, and whether the faculty would be willing to mentor the student.

As other examples, an analysis of over 800 recommendation letters demonstrated that more standout adjectives and ability words were used to describe male as compared to female candidates and, upon large-scale analysis based on over eight million scientific papers, it was found that men predominate in the prestigious first and last author positions.’ (Source - link above)

Gillette ad, removal of masculine role models, "boys will be boys" negative, just turn on the TV.

All the pushes to get 50/50 split CEO's in companies/high paying jobs, become breadwinner, give up having children, admonished for wanting to raise a family instead of work etc

You never hear men in midwifery complain that they don't wanna be called midwives. They just get on with the job. I think people just need to get over all this nonsense and get on with life. Too much whining and moaning these days about every bloody thing.

A good example - but this time the other way round. Males comprise just 1.5% of midwives. The profession needs more midwives. And quite possibly the name puts men off applying.

Sackie, you’ve misunderstood the meaning of the word midwife.

‘The word derives from Old English mid, "with" and wif, "woman", and thus originally meant "with-woman", that is, the person who is with the mother(woman) at childbirth, by traditionally being women those who are pregnant.[6][7][8] The word is used to refer to midwives regardless of gender.’ (Source: Wikipedia - also mentioned in other sources)
