That's pretty cheap for that course. Just $22. Says 90% off. No idea if that's just online marketing but can't go wrong with that price anyway . I'll sign up when i get home thanks!

    Also thanks @The Y-man

They are continually having "sales". But they are usually in the $15 -$25 range, with perhaps just enough time in the $200+ range to justify the 90% off claim.

The one I linked to has reasonable content for a good price, but it depends on your learning style as to whether you get value.

Bugger, too late to the thread. I'm a professional Canon shooter. I would have said, with your budget, get an 80D and a decent lens. Most of the image quality is in the glass (lens) but you still need a decent quality body to capture it.

This was great. It really opened up some of the possibilities of picture taking, with some great imaginative photography which I've tried, but have never succeeded, to emulate. It's pretty digital, but worth while trying to find second hand.

That looks good. And it's on Kindle at a good price.

It's important to learn not only the technical stuff, but also a way of seeing different ways to shoot.

Edit: one review says that there are no photos in the Kindle edition of the book. Is that correct? For a book about photography, that seems like a major omission.

@Sackie was trying out reverse psychology by NOT putting "URGENT" in massive bold font in the heading :D - didn't work by looks of it....

    HI kinnon,

I did have the budget for it but the 200D had so many good reviews for a beginner and was 15% off. Think I paid 600 and something including 30gig card so...

    Maybe my next one.

For really distant scenery what lens would you recommend?

That doesn't quite make sense when you think about it :)
"Scenery" is usually a wide angle shot, where as "distant" is never really "scenery".

Are you talking about taking a long range paparazzi shot?

In all seriousness, I prefer to have 300mm for real distance work (I used to lug a 300mm with my AE-1 to sports events etc)

@Kinnon would prob have some great suggestions, but I would personally aim for a zoom lens and wouldn't discount after market brands like Sigma and Tamron but make sure they are fully compatible for the AF and vibration controls.

Being the unprofessional I am, I might look at something like
Leederville Cameras - Canon EF 70300mm f45.6 IS II USM Lens

    Review here:
Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS II USM Review | Photography Blog

It's still not ideal as it leaves a "hole" between the 55mm reach of your factory lens to the 70mm of this one.

It won't be the brightest (fastest) on the market either as @geoffw mentioned earlier, being f4 at best. Nevertheless, it's slightly better than my "goto" lens.

Looks like there's also a "cheap and cheerful" version (still genuine etc):

Leederville Cameras - Canon EF 75300mm f45.6 III Lens

    review:
Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III USM Lens Review

Just be aware that lenses can be used on your next camera if you get another Canon (this is how they lock you in) ~ so you don't have to throw it out when you upgrade (much more an issue if you decide to go Nikon or Sony or whatever). So "investing" in a good lens now can pay off later.

Are your subjects moving or will you be shooting in low light? Will you have a tripod? Did you want to use it for anything else? How much do you want to spend? Do you like creamy bokeh or not fussed on background blur? Do you want to be able to focus close up to your subject or at a distance is fine?

Like many things in life, you don't know what you don't know and you may think your want one thing but it's actually something else.

What I'd suggest is getting your head around the basics ie shutter speed, aperture, ISO, focal lengths, composition etc and go from there once you get a feel of things.
