This morning before work I did swimming laps for exercise. The place I do this is the Sleeman sport Center, which is a great Brisbane facility with 2 x 50m pools and Olympic diving facilities. They recently hosted the commonwealth games so just painting the picture it is a “serious” sporting facility.

Now, I have always watched the diving boards in the morning, thinking how fun it would be to give them a go, but they are restricted to dive team training, never open for personal use.

Today, as I was walking out I noticed two things. 1. The diving pool was empty, 2. They had forgotten to put the “no entry” sign up on the three meter springboard...

Well, it was now or never, I calmly climbed up to the platform and walked out on the board to assess how high it was. I can see from my peripheral vision two life guards on either side of the Olympic pool accelerating in my direction - but not fast enough...

With two big jumps I perform what is no doubt the ugliest somersault ever performed at the facility, splashing violiently into the water, but chuckling underwater to myself regardless. climbing out of the water and I stand there as a 37 year old man getting told off by the lifeguard like I am 12 again. I said thanks with a smile and went off to work.

Now not to take this act to seriously but a couple of observations-

It felt good to do something a little bit disobedient, there was definite tingle of excitement climbing up that tower.

It felt good to do something no one else does. Could see several people looking at me on the tower and afterwards and wondered if any of them had ever had the same desire to do it.

Sometimes the risk is worth the reward.

I encourage everyone to occasionally break the rules!

Like Robin Hood, except robbing from the rich to give to the rich.
