Also, it's good to show visitors and potential plus ones on my extensive knowledge!

    More like expensive knowledge.

You are far better to show people your knowledge by applying what you read, rather than show people shelves of books you have never read. Otherwise, like many things, they are empty "status symbols", intended only to impress other people, and not to imprive one's own life.

That's true, but fortuntely I have read the majority of the books. Most books on my bookshelf are textbooks from uni.

I do have a library full of paper books myself. I haven't bought a new paper book for some years though. My books are in my study, so they are not visible to most visitors.

Kindles, along with steaming music and video, have substantially cut back my discretionary spending.

Curse you @Terry_w. Addicted to audio books but I feel that it's a skill that needs to be developed because the rentention seems to be abit lower for me.

Nah my job is easy. It's the kids with the issues that have it tough.

Just reading the The Barefoot investor and finding it a pretty good read. I am always open minded to learning and improving my own practices.

I found myself reading mostly investment or property or self improvement books of late and, could not remember the last time I just read something else. So, after hearing a interview by Tim Ferriss on Cheryl Strayed, I ordered "Wild" which she authored...

Just read A God in Ruins and Life After Life by Kate Atkinson after a long drought in the book reading department. She's an amazing writer.
Ebooks are not as satisfying as physical books I find, but it does get expensive.

“How wild it was, to let it be.” - thoroughly enjoyed the book. I thought Cheryl Strayed wrote beautifully and just took me along the journey with her into the Pacific Crest Trail, as well as her troubled past.

I was especially interested to see this, as I have hiked an 80km stretch of the trail.

The actual title of the book is "Wild - a Journey from Lost to Found".

It rates quite well. Apparently there was a movie as well.

Whoa! @geoffw that is amazing. When did you do the hike and how many days did 80 km take you? Which part of the trail?

I have not seen the movie version yet. I enjoyed her writing, the composition, the story telling. It is the first book of hers that I have read. The quote above is the very last sentence of the book. :)

I went many years ago. It was in the Cascades in Washington State, around the Goat Rocks Wilderness Area. It was spectacular, although sometimes a bit precarious. Edging across a glacier with a steep angle and a long drop was a bit scary. Parts of it were along the crest of the mountains..

We did it over a week, so not especially a long distance each day, although there was some quite steep climbing on some days.

    Hi terry

What app do you use for audio books? Can you speed them up like podcasts?

I always thought that Timmy was shifty.
I'm re reading Angela's Ashes, for the gizillionth time, it never fails to make me realise how fortunate I am. One of my favourites that had to be ordered in from the magical land of the USA about 22 years ago is "your money or your life". Also re read The Shark Net recently, wonderful. I'Ve also been gathering books by only Australian authors and preferably Western Australian ones. I'm intending to put these in the granny flat when I turn it into an Airbnb, hope that is not too naff.

I use Podcast Addict which I find to be very good. I didn't realise but it looks like you can speed it up and any speed up to 5x is possible.

There is a free version with ads and a paid version without.
