    My BBQ conversation with friends and family (I work in the industry) is to use recommendations and reviews to find the hotel you want to stay at.

    Once you have decided - use one of the meta search engines to find the best price.eg Kayak, HotelsCombined.

    They will find you the best price (as they can find suppliers who are discounting inventory)

    The suppliers change based on many variables so even if you know them all it would take ages to search them individually.

    Don't forget to check the price direct with the hotel as well... I actually found that to be the cheapest when booking some accom in HK and Macao.
