I have a tiny <40sqm studio on the first floor that needs the bathroom exhausted fan replaced. Its creating excessive humidity in the flat and mould. I have had a quote to supply, install, externally vent and hard wire Fantech Silent Series Humidity Sensor Ventilation System in the bathroom. The cost is $890 which is sooooo expensive. Can anyone suggest a less costly but decent fan or is this the going rate? Its also been suggested to get a portable humidifier but was considering installing a small reverse cycle aircon in the b/r instead as there's no decent heating/cooling systems currently in place. Thoughts? thanks

What about those smaller window mounted extraction fans with a pull cord?
They seem relatively cheap but would probably still require someone to install for you, maybe

Do you have a breakdown of the quote? From what you've described it sounds like much of the cost could be in the installation work rather than the fan itself.

"Fantech Silent Series Humidity Sensor Ventilation System"....
This is a Rolls Royce system - all the bells and whistles...and a price - afik +$450...the vent system alone is pushing $300...
So with labour the quote becomes more reasonable.

Is this a strata unit? Any common wall issues?
Is the current broken fan externally vented?
Can you just replace like for like..?
Has the mould issue been an ongoing problem?

A bit more information may allow members to offer better advice....my 2c...;)

These micro units are common is studio OTP units. They cost a bit as they are small and seemingly quiet and will probably cost more to reduct and change it. A trade supplier product so bargains may be slim

I did find fantech on ebay - You may be able to pick up a replacement there for your model to switch it out?

Thanks all. Paul and Silverghost are correct - its a micro unit and a lot of cost is in the installation
