It's Friday night. It's 6 km to Maccas, I got a quarter tank of fuel, half packet of ciggies, it's dark and I'm wearing sunglasses. Hit it!

Splurging on myself involves steaks/prawns and oysters.
$16/kg for scotch fillet at the butchery.
Oysters have gone up in price though, $18 a dozen medium sized pacific oysters.
$22/kg for nice big sized banana prawns straight from the trawlers.

Yum gonna chow down tonight on some organic silverbeet straight from my backyard... FREE!!

Only sympathy I have for them is that I do think it would be hard to come up with a 20% deposit these days.. 5% no sympathy if they can get a 95% lend...
I do think of you really want something you make it happen though.
We bought our PPOR for around 330k in 2010. You can still buy houses in the outer suburbs in Melbourne for not a whole lot more than this if your not fussy. We were on one income (pretty low) at the time too

I think it's a sickness. But I am the same age and equally "sick".
I sit here eating an $8 meal in a Youth Hostel paid for by coupons. I wear the "new" second hand shoes I just bought off ebay. I relax after finishing the week at my $200k job as I try and scrape the money to fund my $4m development.
    Can you go too far?

@drfuzzy are you sure it's a youth hostel not a half-way house or rehab clinic.

@Scott No Mates I can't afford a half-way house or rehab - I'm a property developer living below the poverty line.

Nope, you can always do more to save.

What you are doing wrong though, if your not using the media to push it into all the moaners faces :)

While I agree sacrifice is the key to success, I can't help but feel posts such as this one are just a little too sanctimonious for my liking.

I was looking for the $10 steak, but all I could find was the $12 version. I didn't want to pay it!

It's all relative.... Could be worse, could be better!
When i was 32, I joined a European tour. Thought I'd never be able to pay back. Well, I didn't feel any scratch. Last month I went to Japan for 2+ weeks, nobody noticed, except those I chose to inform....
It's commendable for what you've achieved this farm, keep up the good work. Just be note ce to yourself and get pampered from time to time.
    Enjoy weekend!

These two bits seem to contradict each other?

But yeah; it's all about choices...

The young guy who works for me is now earning the most money per hour he has ever earned in his life, a few hours overtime each week as well to top it up even more, and not long ago made the statement he wants to seriously knuckle down and save for a house deposit (3 young kids, Partner, renting, 26 years old).. He's a great guy, great Staff member and more knowledge than other blokes twice his age in the industry... a real find for me.

I let him use my work ute so he doesn't have to buy a second car (to help him save more money), but he still hemorrhages money on a massive scale....of course; he doesn't see this.

Take away coffees on the way to work, take away smoko, takeaway lunches, almost a pack of cigs per day, always buying some kind of new "toy"....now talking about buying model remote control airplanes, planning another trip to the themes parks next year....on and on.

I tried to give him a few ideas on how to cut back and save, but doesn't seem to have listened much - so I say nothing anymore....I can't see him ever saving for a deposit at this rate..
