    Hi everyone.

While reading a great article recently posted about cross-listed ETFs (thanks @Redwing), it got me thinking about whether LICs have the same issues to contend with. Can anyone clarify?

For example, if I'm looking into LICs such as WAX, WHF, ARG, MLT etc, how can I tell what their tax situation is (I hate the whole idea of filling in W8-BEN etc), so I really want Australian options only.

    TIA,
    KayTea

The ones you mentioned are all in Australia.

    WHF
In the US I think they call LIC's 'closed end' funds

Is there a quick and easy way to tell if they're not?

Does it help to look up the franking of the dividends? So if the dividends are fully franked do you have to fill out a W8-BEN? Or are they unrelated?

I would think 100% franked dividends would tell you it is an Australian company, otherwise how are they offering credits fit prepaid company tax (unless there is some agreement)

Ok, that sounds like a good place to start. But some Australian companies don't appear to pay dividends, so I'm not sure if all Australian LICs would be 100% franked dividends.

If you look up the code on ASX and go to the Details tab you should be able to see if it is foreign. Eg the IOO ETF is foreign, AFI is not.

Some of the foreign listings may be from a country other than the US so no W8BEN but who knows what other complications they may have.

You may be able to see if it is foreign or cross listed even easier on your brokerage platform - it's easy once you know where to look on Westpac which I use.

Hey @mimosa I'm not sure how to identity the country where it is located based on the information in the Details tab - I'm not seeing anything about where it is domiciled given here.

On the Details tab it will say Exempt Foreign? and then Yes or No. Yes means it is foreign.
