Just be very careful on cruises... tempting to overeat but just don't do it. A 2kg gain is actually ok compared to many people though.

I'm the same. 6 hours max. Go with it. What else can we do?

This thread is a blast from the past :).

I have a new realisation in my arsenal of not being a fat *******: "It's OK to leave food on the plate" I used to eat everything in front of me because it was there, now I stop when i have had enough, no more gluttonous behaviour :).

I eat everything on my plate.
Except if it's say, a never ending buffet meal....
Or if I physically really can't finish it (which nearly never happens)

It's also helpful to recognise (and acknowledge) aspects of your upbringing that may affect the relationship with food.

As kids we were not allowed to leave the table until we had finished everything on our plate - even the dreaded liver, bacon, onion and gravy mix (blergh) ... it meant, as an adult, I simply couldn't leave anything on my plate and would stuff it in even if I was already overfull.

Until, like you, I realised it was conditioning rather than actually being hungry. Now I still rarely leave anything, but take smaller portions to start with.

One downfall is the glass or two (or three) of wine in the evening ... one while cooking dinner, one while eating, one after as a wind down ... then I find I start craving something sweet for dessert. Am aware of it, have to learn to deal with it.

Another issue is that I'm not moving as much. Being on a farm, one would think you exercise all day - but you don't. When we lived in the inner city I would walk everywhere - walk the dog to the beach and back - walk to get the paper - walk to friends houses - walk to the school ... now I drive everywhere, including around the farm, because the distances are not feasibly walk-able

Hah me too!!!! and sometimes you would be there for hours and it would be starting to congeal but you STILL had to eat it lol.

I like a few wines in the evening too but another thing I have learned in more recent times is to not have a drink with my dinner.

Like a lot of humans I would scoff and tend to not chew properly and as a result use a drink to pack the food down. I now know that digestion starts in the mouth and I need to chew chew chew :). Now I eat my meal chewing properly and pour a drink after I have finished eating :).

This really isn't a problem if you are not a scoffer as you won't be using liquid to push under chewed food down your gullet :).

That's really difficult. My only solution was to serve much smaller portion sizes. I can cut the serving size by 20% and still be happy. It also helps me to have a smaller plate. I would find it very difficult to leave food.

I try but sometimes when a curry has been bubbling away for a couple of hours, I always have eyes bigger than my belly :p

When the curry is bubbling away... do you mean before or after you eat it?
