...the number of people with degrees in mechanical engineering, finance and law that can't find jobs is growing rapidly.[/QUOTE]

What did the mechanical engineer say to the law undergrad?

"Do you want fries with that?".

Technically shouldn't it be "Can you put another lot of fries in the fryer?"

Given they're working together at Maccas and all ;)

@wogitalia - not enough jobs to go around. Either that or the lawyer doesn't know about the requirements of experience.

I'd choose the person with experience, but the law says I'd have to pay them what the award states, not what they say they're happy to accept... so the raw graduate!

My Hubby works in a big ASX type company and has been there since the early 1990s. He grew into his current IT role. He is permanent but almost every other person is on a one or two year contract. This company does not hire ANYONE as a permanent these days and has not done so for many years.

The lady in the article did state she has done temp jobs which seem to be related to her particular qualifications. The govt generally doesn't employ permanents either these days.

    Concur.

Given the costs and obstacles relating to being able to fire staff, long service leave, sick leave and so on these days - many places are going to opt for that employment set up into the future.

Any future staff I employ will be under a Contract arrangement...12 months at a time maximum.

If they're duds; it's not long until you can shove 'em out the door without any ongoing BS with Fairwork Australia, redundancy pay, and so on.

Do you know if the contract workers where your husband works have Annual Leave included in their Contracts, Angel?

I don't know about the very short term, but in his section those who stay after one year (many find better jobs elsewhere) get leave.

Qualifications are a good starting point, but also important is how the person applies the knowledge.

A huge factor is how well they perform in interviews. Are they prepared to move to where the work is? Maybe a regional area? Or does a geologist want to work in the middle of a big city? Are they prepared to start in a less attractive role but in a company with opportunities? Have they done part time work in their chosen field while studying?

Look around your family and friends - those who were the brightest at school and uni aren't necessarily the ones with the most successful careers.
