Yep! And I think more are going this way too (first step anyway). Whether there's a piece of paper involved or not, the second step is still very expensive either way.

I had 359 guests at my wedding. Both sides of Mediterranean decent.

I made a profit after banking all the gifts :)

avoiding something is NOT an investment strategy. I got married by elvis in vegas which was great as it was super easy and fun, and we didnt bother to register in Australia so still benefit from separate estates. I don't understand why people get married at all; historically there was no choice but today - it's completely redundant. Law and tax regimes punish those getting married, mostly via CGT. In China when the govt forced couples to reduce their PPR status for one per couple instead of per individual there was a spate of divorces...

Any downsides to not registering your marriage? How about estate planning and taxation if the worst happens to either of you?

That's right I think the article is from US, they forget all the 'wogs' weddings!
Some of my friends gave the newlyweds houses for gifts, have we forgotten the movie, "My Big Fat Greek Wedding"?

I married a Greek thinking that was past of their custom and tradition :)

Missed out on the house but the food definitely makes up for it.

Might as well add in "never go on holidays, or eat ever again. Just invest the money and have no life ever"

Yes, it seems the author portrays wealth only in financial terms, very shallow!
Wealth to me means the whole holistic approach to good life, family, spouse, children, health, spirituality, exercise...basically applying money to 'fashion' the good life!
Do you know any hermit that locked themselves in a cave that was happy, when there was no-one to share with?
I am surprised people publish such nonsense...
We are even encouraged to have a pet if we are elderly, single and lonely to prolong and have a happier life!
