Good coffee beans are always on special at Coles and Woolies. Generally 40-50% off for a 1kg bag of cafe quality beens. Had the one espresso machine at my home for the last 5 years. Serviced only once. Milk is $1/litre. I use the machine twice a day, unlike most kitchen gadgets that you buy and they gather dust in the cupboard.

I find that the Aldi coffee beans make a much nicer coffee than many of the brand name beans, at a better price.

Sometimes the other supermarket beans on special have "been" there longer.

Not being a coffee snob - and using a "gasp" plunger - my already ground beans can sit in a tightly sealed container for years before finally being used up ... still tastes the same to me

This seems to be a common view, it's not just you. But why is somebody who has different tastes from you a snob? My daughter calls me a coffee snob too, just because I really enjoy a good coffee when I find one. She's the one who took me to some nice coffee shops in Melbourne.

I don't even drink wine for instance, but if somebody wants to make a big thing about grapes or vintage or the sunny side of the hill, that's their perogative, that's for their own enjoyment.

Taste is an individual thing. It can depend a lot on experience (as well as experiences). My taste is just different to somebody else's. Some people have far higher standards than me, some lower. The people who make coffee who have high standards have raised the standards somewhat, and have made an experience which is far different to the coffee I grew up with. That's given me different taste experiences to those I've had before, experiences I've enjoyed a lot.

A plunger is not necessarily a bad thing. Produces a different flavour to the forced steam thingamajiggies.

...but a drip percolator .... now let's see who will admit to that one! :D

By the way, I just came back from Kuching - the coffee there was...."interesting"..... (thought it was muddy water the first cup...)

Was tempted to buy one - but I don't drink enough coffee to justify a carafe jug full of the good stuff :D

Sunbeam Stainless Drip Filter Electronic Coffee Maker

Now - herbal tea - drink about 6-8 buckets of the stuff every day - peppermint, green, chamomile, ginger/lemon ....

Watch out for the tea pee.

I think that, with herbal tea, you never have snobs, just aficionados.
