What a Focken waste of money......... Would much rather see the money spent on helping the homeless or kids cancer funding or more Ronald McDonald houses etc....and instead they want to waste all that money on some nonsense.

Public sculptures: We paid for that?

I agree. There's so much fuss been raised lately about public statues and how they reflect a bygone culture. ronald-mcdonald-statue-slap.jpg

Unfortunately you have used a "false dilemma" to prove a point. Are there really no other options to fund this art other than taking money from "helping the homeless or kids cancer funding or more Ronald McDonald houses etc"?

Don't forget, people hated the opera house and considered it a waste of money also. You might want to consider that investing in public arts, festivals, culture, etc, makes a city more desirable to live in, which in turn is better for property investors.

The Opera House compared to a long bent piece of steel in the sky... no comparison.

Spending 11mil on a piece of steel is ludicrous imo when the money could be far better spent.

I like it. I liked the first version more, though. It's going to be great.
To put the spend in perspective, the city council spend around $7m on New Years Eve celebrations. That makes this thing pretty good value.

The rate payers of Sydney City are certainly a tolerant lot, given the council should be focusing on filling potholes and emptying bins.

10mil isn't much. That's lose change compared to the infrastructure the gub is "trying" to build around syd!

Would be good to see an aussie artist but I'm not expert. I am willing to giving it a crack if clover needs me

I'm in the city everyday and can confirm that the bins are being emptied and there don't seem to be a lot of potholes. So the council are on top of that stuff and do lots of other things, too. Being spring next week, the council will start putting out daily the 100 deckchairs in the courtyard between the council building and the cathedral. We had Vivid earlier this year that was huge as usual. Art and About runs for three weeks in September. The week before last they paid an aerial group from SF to do a performance in Martin Place on the side of one of the buildings there. The Night Noodle Market will happen soon. And soon they'll start work on a huge sculpture. They do a great job.

People can use the Opera House, for stuff like Opera, Ballet, Oprah, even Lleyton and Bec's TV-like wedding. Tick.

I reckon you could bend a length of steel for a mere $1M if you don't get a govt grant to do it. What do you then do with it? Hang Christmas lights and Chinese lanterns off it?

Dont forget the other 10.3m will be allocated for council inefficiency, waste and approvals. Not to mention an engineering company that will go for their life in fees as council will just pay it. After all, the money is easily replaced by more road fines.

I'm sure the designer will get a few mil for their time on coral draw.

I doubt Junya Ishigami would even get off his futon for 100k.

Without the hammers and chisels used to carve it.

I'm sure all 5 yo will be fascinated by it.

"Ishigami has been paid $350,000 so far" LOL

Can't wait to see how much he ends up with when all the shenanigans is over with.

It's acceptable because government truly don't care one bit. Oh well, they do what they gotta do and we do what we gotta do. Never rely on them for anything.
