How to stop a URL or email address from being auto-linked in post or signature content

Entering a URL or an email address in a post (or signature block) will cause it to become auto-linked into a hyperlink when saved.

Normally this is the desired behaviour, but sometimes can be undesired - especially in the case of signature...
