Has anyone got a retractable / louvre style patio roof?

After looking at all the options (sun sails, poly-carbonate, angled batons) I think this is the one for me. I want the option to have full sun but also the ability to close it completely if it rains.

However, it seems like a mechanical / electrical system that is the very epitome of being exposed to the elements (being the literal roof) might be very prone to breaking down. I was wondering if anyone has experience with them?

We had one over a patio 25 years ago. It was great (though rather expensive).

It allowed light into a timber panelled living room when we needed light, but stopped weather hitting the patio or French doors when we wanted the protection.

We didn't have any problems with breaking down.

Great thank you. I reckon modern day ones might even have the ability to program them too so they are auto synced to the weather. That would be sweet.

We have a Vergola. Its awesome, it can be controlled by phone app and has a sensor so it can be set to close when it rains. We haven't had any problems with it

Ours also was a Vergola (couldn't recall the name though) and we chose a button inside to open or close. I am fairly sure at the time we could have it automated, but didn't need that.

When we'd not had it for long, we had visitors for lunch, beautifully set table, crystal and china, decided to open the roof as it was such a lovely day. We'd forgotten we had a leopard tree beside and whole table copped a dumping of leopard tree tiny leaves on our "just perfect" table setting. :p

So is Vergola a brand or a style?

I'm sure Vergola was a brand, and over the years, we did see other brands, same style of product.

When we moved house, we put in a pool with a pergola over the top for keeping the sun off the kids when they spend a whole day in the pool. We priced up Vergola, but it was too expensive for the size we needed.

We chose 96% block shade cloth, but that meant we had to add solar heating. We should probably have just paid for the Vergola and allowed the sun to heat the pool, and close it when the kids were swimming.

Yeah that makes sense, the pool would have been cold as hell!

Alight I'll research Vergola and similar brands. Thanks everyone

Several months ago, I enquired about a roof for our deck and was told that the those with adjustable blades (Vergola type) cost approx. $1000 per sq. m.

    Not vergola. Not even similar.

We got an awning with a removable winder mechanism so you could open and close it. It was cheap as chips at the time. Bought it about 15 years ago, and it's still there and working well. It was on the PPOR at the time, but been tenanted now for about 13 years. Ours was similar to the attached photo.....but with more depth.

I'm concerned about the wind for those especially with a bigger area.

Really looking at this as alternative to a fully covered alfresco

As I said, it's been working well for about 15 years now, and bigger than the example I gave. You can wind it back in when it's windy. Again though, nothing like the vergola, but worked for us at the time.

We have laserlight in Melb as it seems:
    • Summer - too hot, need roof closed
    • Autumn - getting cool, cloudy days, showers - closed
    • Winter - wet and cold - closed
    • Spring - ok a few days here and there! Otherwise windy as heck.

But I guess since we get 4 seasons in one day, there must a few minutes here and there when you can open it up :D (Same argument for convertibles in Melb)

I guess that's an option as you describe. We like the available sunlight coming in during the cooler months.
But I'd also like the option to add shade screens to keep the mozzies out.
They seem to get busy when it's nice out.

Yes. They will break / bend in wind. Same as caravan and motorhomes. Some have wind sensors to auto-rewind but a sudden southerly could still see it damaged extensively. Bends the supports arms. Also most are vinyl / fabric and become prone to tearing. Ever seen the covered sails over Coles parking outside. They tear with age and wind.

vergola and similar high end awnings are more structurally sound and have weather sensors. Lots of options as an example. Worked with a guy who got quotes and he found them far more expensive than fixed steel.

Does it work well enough to block heat?
