Glad it worked for you. I know others that have great results with family members, and some with extremely bad results.

Yes seems to be the case of 'you won't know until you do it'. If it doesn't work out, could be very messy (and costly).

I know you're not a TA like me but I'd be inclined to buy a secondhand door on Gumtree/Facebook and get a chippy to install. Am doing that myself right now.

And your dimensions don't sound hard to satisfy....a lot of 2.1m high doors out there - some new/barely used....even bifolds.

It's going into into a 2m+ property then onto the market so it have to be in almost new condition. I'll look though.

I know this is an old thread, but what would that cost to install in a fibro wall? In country NSW. Same doors, but need to make the back door into a double door by cutting out the fibro. I'm unsure if it's a structural wall, probably is. Thanks.

    Is it asbestos?

Needs new header, resupport the roof whilst the work is done, framing the new opening, flashing, probable recladding if it's asbestos.

    Check out a few locals.

Thanks so much, do you have a rough idea of cost? Yes, it's asbestos, but builders there don't seem to worry too much as all houses are- in an old mining town- hopefully they wear the correct respirator, but tbh they don't seem to bother up there, nor with recladding, eg when we've had the air con put in and hole cut out etc, or they've cut holes in the laundry wall. I certainly would, but I guess it's their choice. It's in the country, so not Sydney building prices (hopefully!). Cheers.

Its illegal to cut break or alter asbestos in each state. The max penalty is death. Hefty fines $1m for individuals and $4m for company. . Asbestos is suppossed to be removed if it needs to be handled, cut, sawn etc. Replaced with a compliant product. Only licensed contractors may handle the material.

Its not their choice. Its the property owner oblgation and that of all trades. The obligations exist for all the community. Its a bit reckless to consider you can turn a blind eye and blame them.

I don't agree with what they do...I was exposed to massive amounts of asbestos as a child as was my mother as my father was a builder, before people were fully aware, in the mid to late '70s. He possibly died of it. I'm just saying what happens in country towns. I said to previous tradespeople that it was asbestos and shouldn't they take precautions, and they just said "nuh, we don't worry about it, we do it everyday", so please don't put the responsibility on me. I know it should be removed correctly, but even in Sydney they left a lot of it at my mother's house a few years ago, I wasn't there, but I said I wouldn't pay them fully until they did...they never did. It happens a lot unfortunately. P.s it's not illegal to cut asbestos, they just should use safety equipment and make sure they keep it wet at all times from what I've read, and take it to a special place at the tip.

It is lucky that you live in the country as there will be plenty of room for the cowboys you have allowed to work on your home to park their horses. Have you considered the risk to you and your family from the dust left after the asbestos has been cut or broken?

No one has lived there for a long time, but yes I would always use a P2 mask etc...and yes, it concerned me at the time. Can you please lay off, my partner has just passed away and my mother has had a stroke, and I'm chronically ill...I didn't ask a question to be bullied about incompetent builders/handymen whom I don't know. I wish ppl would worry more or equally about pesticides and other industrial chemicals which have left me largely bedridden since I was a young woman.
