Younger adults can get very sick and die from COVID-19 too. Here's the data

    Professor Peter Wark
Conjoint Professor Wark is from the school of medicine and public health at the University of Newcastle.

    9th August 2021

We learned this week of the tragic death of a 27-year-old man from Sydney who had COVID-19. This follows a 38-year-old woman who died from the virus last month.

Throughout the current Delta outbreak in New South Wales, we’ve heard young people are making up a greater proportion of people in hospital compared with earlier in the pandemic. We’re seeing similar patterns overseas.

In NSW between June 13 and July 17, the 30-49 age group represented the highest number of COVID-19 hospitalisations, with 45 people in their 30s and 40s admitted (26% of total COVID hospitalisations).

Some 13 people aged 49 and under were admitted to ICU, representing 36% of total ICU admissions, with the youngest just a teenager.
What’s behind this worrying trend? Is it the fact more older people are now vaccinated? Or perhaps the Delta variant is causing more severe disease in young people? It may well be a bit of both. Let’s take a look.

Older age is the biggest risk factor
As we learned about COVID-19 last year, it became clear the elderly were the most likely to get very sick. This is true of other infectious diseases too.

    ...
But younger people are more likely to be infected
People aged in their 20s have consistently made up a high proportion of COVID-19 cases in Australia and overseas.

If we look at all cases of COVID-19 recorded in Australia since the pandemic began, 20 to 29-year-olds account for the highest number (around 22% of total infections).

Reports indicate 67% of new cases recorded in NSW on Thursday were in people under 40.

Wow, so half of young people who've had and recovered from COVID now have 'long COVID'/persistent symptoms?

That is scary and makes vaccination an absolute no brainer.

Sadly they seem to be the most prolific breeders.

I have been following the long covid phenomenon.
    1) It is real 100%
    2) It varies in degrees of suffering
    3) Duration varies
    4) No cure for it so far.

Anyone else want to add to it?

You can't judge if a person is young of age post covid era. Long Covid turns a healthy person into old person ailment syndrome.

Much is going on in that area. One study published in March 2021 and there are more.

    Children with long covid

Has the medical profession failed the rest of us? Hmm, better not go there. :)

Long Covid in children is still low - running at 1.8% of children diagnosed with Covid - but still distressing

It certainly is distressing. I sometimes need to remind myself that percentages can have an effect of being deceiving. 1.8% may not seem large but 1.8% of 1m that's 18,000 children. Not good at all.

An Australian study indicates that children tend to recover completely from Covid
    DEFINE_ME

However, from the date of this report, this would be pre Delta, and Delta appears to hit children harder than previous strains. Delta has probably not been around long enough to provide meaningful studies of long term effects.
