Interesting question, when I was bringing my wife up to speed on my investment ideas nine months ago, I explained to be successful at this, our concept of money had to change, so I answer the question with a question. Do you think it is?

12 months ago it was a lot to me, now? It's part of a deposit for an IP I don't consider its net value anymore, future value is what matters to me now :)

No I don't think it is.

But for people living week to week with zero savings it must seem huge.

I read the most of the property investor magazines, not for knowledge but for having an understanding of what the media is trying to ram down peoples throats. If you went by the media's investment philosophies as gospel, you would have purchased a house in Gladstone in 2010 and thought of Sydney as never having any potential for growth at the time.

Mate it sounds like you need someone to hold your hand and show you how to save, before you even consider investing your money into real estate. Yes the magazine will occasionally give some tips on saving money, but the point of the article is not about how the ladies were given money for their deposits, but rather what they did with that money to build their wealth.

Why would you want to read about how someone saved $20k, when you should rather focus on their strategies on how they've invested that money. I'm sure other open minded young people will see the value of how another young person has been sensible and not blown their money on partying, but tried to do something useful with it.

Furthermore, the magazine is just telling someone's story. What you read is not the be all and end all of property investing. It allows you to see someone's perspective and whether you take anything from that or not, is up to you. We are not all in the same financial situations, so why would we be so narrow minded and only read about people who are all in one kind of situation?

I say CONGRATULATIONS to the two ladies. It is a tremendous achievement to have been featured in the magazine and have been successful in investing their money at such a young age. Well done!
