I reckon the saviour of this will be smart trolleys where it totals the items as you place them in using some sort of RF id tech.

You get to the checkout, pay then go off to a bagging area. No need to block up the checkouts :).

I agree Dan, there have been people trialing this tech overseas already. Looks promising.
I wonder if it will outweigh the cost of hiring a few more casuals though?

Went for a walk early this morning and had another look, the carpark and the truck drop off bay is all cctv from the entry point, and went back a hour or so ago into the supermarket asked to talked too the manager about what i saw a while back...
All he said was every now and again they put a scan-tape inside the bottom of the meat, not sure how that's works ..But he also there is a bank of screens out the back and the ones that get away next time they come back they will not let them in the shop..

We should send the grape stealers to a land far away for a few years hard labour. I suggest England.

Does anybody know the stats for the increase in shrinkage since the introduction of self-scamming devices?

What is Coles/Woolies turnover if shrinkage is worth $1b?

How much were they able to reduce wages upon introduction of the scanners?

Does it outweigh the cost of increased shrinkage/technology/floor space utilisation?

I decided to get some chestnuts from Coles a few weeks ago. I thought wow fancy, I can roast them and everything. I tried and tried to find them on the self-service checkout screen but they were not there. I was trying to pay, but they were not on "the system". The poor staff girl had to hunt for ages to eventually conclude that it was not possible to charge for them, and thus she gave them to me for free. A nice little win. Just like when you order two potato cakes at the Fish n Chip shop and they give you three. Jackpot !

I think it's highly unethical to steal anything from supermarkets with the exception of Mach3 razor blades.

I assumed they were, and had just come up with a new and creative way to address their serviceability issues ...
