Worth mentioning this is for coles though, not sure if the same for woolies. And, IIRC, the PLU codes are below the pictures too so you can get to remember the stuff you buy all the time.

If we assume checkout operators are paid $20 per hour and they are employed for 37 hours a week 52 weeks per year, then $1.1B equates to:

    $1.1B / $20 / (37 x 52) = 28,586 full time checkout operators.

With 776 Coles supermarkets in Australia, this equates to over 36 extra checkout operators per store.

I am not condoning theft but why doesn't Coles just employ a few extra (thousand) checkout operators?

Seems to make financial sense to me.

Relax. It was tongue in cheek. What's more valuable than your own time anyway?

Because they're insured against theft/stock loss. Any new measures to prevent theft will just reduce their premiums.

I couldn't steal from anywhere as I'd be too worried about the embarrassment of getting caught!
But I refuse to self checkout as we are still paying the same price to practically work for free for the supermarket to serve ourselves, I would only use self checkout if they were giving atleast a 10% discount on my shop, plus I like standing relaxing while someone else does it.
Imho the machines are crap anyway nearly every time I've used them they stuff up and need assistance and the bagging area is too small

Not all theft is done via self service checkout
1.1bn is total theft,a few extra thousand checkout operators will not make a difference when it comes to idiots putting stuff in their bags or pockets and walking out

I would have expected Coles to self-insure.

If they lose $1.1B in theft, what is their premium?

Probably make a difference if they got rid of the self checkouts and made everyone through the 'manned' ones :) :).

Must be a NSW thing; in Vic, they will say 'red delicious' etc

However, I hate the fact that they are plastic, not paper.

No, never done that. However, I do take the tomatoes off the stalk - happy to pay for truss, not happy to pay for the stalk.

If the green stem bit comes off, I explain that they are truss - won't steal. If I feel too cash strapped for the cost of truss tomatoes, I do without.

(How many IPs do you have, again?)

Wait so you do take them off or not?

I have 3 IPs and if I buy enough tomatoes I will have 4 by the end of this year

No I dont steal from the supermarket, not even the 15c bags to put things in. I was raised to be honest and with a strong moral centre, and I dont take anything that is not mine.
