If not out of my way, I’d drop it off. If far away, I’d hand into the police.

A friend of mine found a wallet in Oxford Street, had to kick it all the way to George St before he picked it up.

If I could track down the owner I would hand it back personally. Police are a last resort.

I like to think I am a good person and there is not enough good people in the world, if I let the actions of others stop me being a good person, it does nothing to the wrong doer but reduces the number of good people in the world.

This would make me become part of the problem instead of part of the solution :(.

"Of course there was no money in it."

Was that when you found it or when you handed it over ?

No question I'd give it back. If I found $50 on a street somewhere, that one's a bit of a dillema.

I'm guessing you've never owned a pair of pants with an idiotically small rear pocket that can eject its contents conveniently as you pull them up. I've had it happen once (with a couple close calls, so I should have known better) I chose to rag the pants and check pocket sizes when I buy new ones. Better option than forgetting my wallet or phone somewhere.

I found $50 in a self serve checkout at woolies. I quickly called the attendant and we looked around to see if someone was coming back for it. No one turned up so she printed out the transaction receipt and put it with the note so they could identify the owner when they came back to claim it. I hope they remembered and came back for it.

I think you did the right thing
I found a wallet on the floor at night as i was getting out of my car. From details on the visa card was able to track down te institution and person. they were very releived and sent me a lovely thank you card and its a proud story to teach my kids of honesty. Another time i tracked down owners of a school blazer ( they are expensive?) and they bought me a cou ple of tattslotto tickets in return with gratefulness. If i can return something lost to someone i do and so far i've gotten gratefulness.
