Been to all except Iceland, I would agree, we are worse than the others especially since Sydney and Melbourne would drag our ratings waaaay down :(

It is a disgraceful situation really.

    Global Peace Index - Wikipedia

13th - Australia is a very safe country. GPI is not without issues (DVAWAC not included .... I would image that would affect au and nz dramatically)

A dumb system, just like any other system that tries to compare all countries using any index. Financial contribution to UN peacekeeping missions is one metric used in this research. As if that makes you any more or less safe of a country. Nuclear and heavy weapons capability and other that have nothing to do with safety.

I was surprised we were not in the top 10... NZ made it...good for them

This is how they determine safest.....

Ongoing International and Domestic Conflict Societal Safety and Security Militarization The factors used to compile this report include: Number of internal and external violent conflicts Level of distrust Political instability Potential for terrorist acts Number of homicides Military expenditures as a percentage of GDP

So we bombed out in the political arena....??
