As reported in the press the silhouette of a woman will soon replace the "green and red man" at traffic lights in Richmond Victoria for the first time in Australia.

Richmond will also be passing a bi-law requiring all women to wear dresses that cover the knees whilst crossing the road. Pants are definitely not allowed.

In all seriousness it's nice that they're introducing gender equality in street signs, but they will also have spent a significant amount of money simply on the design and urban planning for this. The article suggests that the changes are being made to particular intersections, rather than replacement where maintenance is required. There's so many better ways this money could have been spent.

Where is the transgender/unassigned/no gender/androgenous street crossing sign? This is obviously oppression and an attempt to marginalise.

I'm a big believer in equality but this is ********.

Traffic lights are supposed to be functional to the extent where they can save people's lives. The picture of a man is more distinct. There's no two ways about it. There needs to be no confusion about what shape you're seeing. That skirt? Hat? This is not supposed to represent a man per se, but a human in its most abstract form. I don't see testicles either, if we're going to go there. It's also about standardisation - what's common across areas or even countries. People are used to what a stop sign looks like for example and if you were to make it a red hand people would still get it but they would pause momentarily to digest it. Even if it's a fraction of a second it might be enough to take a life. This is not the time and place for this stuff.

I find the use of Mary Poppins more offensive than the normal man (which isn't offensive in the slightest.) They could at least have given her a parasol.

Also, that skirt length is appalling.

I wondered if someone complained that the pedestrian light is too male orientated?

And where is the curve on that traffic light? That could be a man wearing Mary Poppins dress.

I wonder how much money was wasted on public servants, committee meeting and focus groups to come up with that...

It would be much more appropriate to have a modern lady, like a silhouette of Sophia Vergara.

There's places overseas which show pedestrians how many seconds until the light changes to red. Far better use of traffic lights IMO.
