I say good on this lady for not following "due process" and good on Nine News for not being scared to report it :)

By the way, she threw the "tenants" belongings in a rubbish bin. I at least had them placed nicely on the sidewalk when I did this (although it did start raining very shortly after, drenching the various items, including a TV, clothes and some books and magazines).

There seems more to this than reported
But good for her, she got lucky.

I always understood that "squatting" required a squater to be on site at all times ?
I'd invite them all down to the pub for mediation at my cost/shout, and thereby regain possesion by default by "going to the toilet" and doing a runner to meet the locksmith :D
Leaving the squaters with my meal and drinks bill :p

Cops don't turn up and turf "tenants" out. Police won't get involved in civil matters so must have seen that a law was broken. Trespass?

It would be interesting to know the legal difference between a squatter and a trespasser.

Bad situation. However, typical 60 Minutes over done approach. In other words, take 15 minutes to tell a 2 minute story...

They surely must have been egging on the owner to give all her 'over the top' commentary...the place was messy, but there didn't seem to be any damage caused by the squatters.

Can't comment in regards to the law and a squatter.
But by asking them to leave, and their refusal, commits the acts of trespass. Under common law you then have the jurisdiction to 'remove' them.
Seems like this was the case in the article.

What a crock of misleading 'journalism'. As far as I can tell, what the owner did was the 'due process' - there wasn't a tenancy, and hence no tenancy needed to be terminated through the courts.

Seems like the 'squatters' had no legal rights to be at the house and it was quite clear cut. Any rights of occupation were almost certainly withdrawn once they booted the owner's daughter out - she was their source of legal rights there.

Correct process was to take physical possession yourself backed up with physical support and/or police if required. I've given such legal advice in similar situations many times before.

The myth of 'squatter's rights' is ridiculously over-inflated in this country.

The Lord's prayer says trespassing is forgiven, squatting is not.

BM, that was lucky, because some ne'er-do-well might have chucked a match in it and torched all their stuff, and then ACA might have had some more content relating to trespassers whose stuff got torched, but don't have any insurance...
