Surely there is more to the story in the Sydney Morning Herald today about the tenant family who were evicted without excuse for wanting a new stove. It is being used as a reason to cancel the law about no excuse evictions, they have been there 4.5 years and were the perfect tenants. What landlord would evict because of this???

Just as dubious as Meriton charging $1,000 + GST for a pet licence.

Sounds like there must be some revisions to the residential tenancy act being planned.

Why so sceptical of the story?

We have lots of examples even on this forum of advice on here to either raise the rent or ditch a tenant who either complains a lot or asks for improvements to the premises.

I haven't read the story myself, but the broad narrative isn't hard to believe.

Gotta be more to that story. No landlord in their right mind would give up consistent and steady cashflow for 4.5 years over a genuinely faulty stove that is their responsibility anyway.

Maybe landlord needed to move back into the place?
Maybe the stove wasn't faulty at all and tenants are demanding a newer fancier one?
Maybe because of that it was deliberately broken?
Maybe tenants have been painful to deal with or are in rent arrears or have turned feral?

Seems like landlord bashing is the flavour of the month in the media....maybe next month they'll publish some articles about landlords doing it tough so they can sell to other half.....

This is a hot topic. The story is probably only half baked. However, there might be an element of truth and a lot of people would love to see the landlord get burned.

Obviously we don't know the whole story, never will. I would say it's likely there is more to the story, very few would kick out a truly good tenant just because.

If these guys were on a periodic lease, they would've received 90 days notice? That's the right one in NSW? If so, that's more than ample time to find a new place, yes it's frustrating to move house on someone else's terms - but that's a risk that comes with renting a property.

On the face of it, the tenant possibly had some grounds to oppose a no grounds termination as well, for it being retaliatory.

Yes, 90 days notice from LL in NSW on a periodic lease.

What is more frustrating IMO is the mere 14 days notice a tenant on a periodic lease can give. The RTA laws are already very biased in favour of the tenant.

AFAIK it's 21 days in NSW not 14 days.

You`re right mate, it is 21 days. Sorry, my bad!

More bad advice from my PM who recently passed on 16 or 17 days notice from previous tenants that didn`t want to renew lease.

    4. Ending a periodic agreement
If this agreement is a periodic agreement it may be
ended by the landlord or the tenant by giving written
notice of termination. The notice may be given at any
time. The landlord must give at least 90 days notice and
the tenant must give at least 21 days notice.
