Bugger that sitting out in the open still freezing in front of a fire. One of these on our covered deck does the job:

I personally think being near a naked flame can be dangerous hence I avoid outdoor fire pits:

But where do the marshmallows - and empty head fire gazing - occur?

Marshmallows go into the hot chocolate. If I want fire I’ll retreat inside and put the combustion heater on whilst lounging in front of it with a red wine. None of that uncivilised out door stuff:D.

That's a mere few weeks off too ... can't wait!

Anyhow - think the cat was trying to tell me something - combined with her pre-dawn morning chat to hubby, she then flagrantly used me as a hot water bottle under the doona

    Nice fire pit!

Now all you need is a fire grate to put in there or something to keep the burning wood off the ground/bottom.
Fire needs oxygen to burn bright and hot, especially good to get the wood well off the ground otherwise becomes smokey and needs constant stoking.

Yep - needs a flow of air from underneath to keep it burning hot ... unless you're going to use it as a Hangi (inground oven)

Rather than start a thread, thought I'd post in this one. Electricity prices locally are increasing massively.

    Anyway, read this article.
Your home could be leaking heat through the windows — here are some simple hacks to fix it - ABC Everyday

The author of the article wrote in the section for insulation film: "I'm going to try this option for my big, north-facing bedroom window to maximise the amount of sunlight during the day, which will help warm the house."

I'm not sure how putting that film on the North facing room helps for winter (as opposed to a south facing room). Wouldn't you lose more heat from windows in a south facing room?

The insulation film on a north facing room idea makes total sense to me for summer heat, but not so much for winter cold, where its a better temperature outside with the sun than in? It would stop trapped warmth from getting out, but it works for rooms in other sides of the home as well too?

The author is going to try it for one north facing window, because that's what they have - they might not have any south facing windows. Or they might be trying the bubble wrap, curtains or corflute on the south facing windows - they won't be losing any sun by doing so.

It may be better to do more research than a single article in trying to get a solution.

We're going to get double glazing in the house we're building - cost is around $8k.

Article doesn't mention it but yes, you could be right. My dad does an extra window covering DIY method but it doesn't look good.

Anyway, I just ordered this from Amazon.
Duck Brand SFWK Shrink Film Window Insulation Kit: 62 in. x 420 in. (Clear/Indoor-Grade) / 10 Pieces https://amzn.asia/d/7FfnwDi

If you are building... yes, I think the 8k for double glazed windows is a excellent investment.
