Another estimate question, how much should I pay to change all doors and windows. Its a 4 bed house. I would be changing all the internal doors/frames and installing window frames as they are not installed at the moment.

You can guess how many doors / windows are in a 4 bed 2 bath home.

Get a few quotes. Price depends on the size of the windows, the material, the type of glass, and the quality.

consider existing door frames and hinges

    620 720 82”Internal with hardware $100
920 single External with hardware $150

Windows really depends standard window to remove and install new one aluminium, $350-450.

For a new 4.2.2 windows order new supply and install is around $3500-4500

The internal door price quoted ($100) won’t cover the cost of the door and installation (even for cheap hollow core doors).

Where did you find someone to rebate the hinges, cut the holes for the hardware and hang it for $35?

Have hung plenty of doors for clients... $35? Not a chance.

    Maybe an Airtasker hire?

Though Airtasker takes around 15% as the fee for using their site, so that’s $35 minus 15%...

Prehung door and jamb into a square opening?

That's below the costing rates I'd used 20 years ago. I'd be surprised if you can get a licensed & insured carpenter on a charge-out rate of less than $65/hr on a full day's job.

I want to play using a recent 3 bed - 1 bath house for reference. Powered coated aluminum windows for a 4 bed - 2 bath home would be approx $20k including installation. Plus or minus the cost of double glazing, choice of raw aluminum or powered coated or timber or even vinyl wrap. Then you have the choice of awning style or sliding style that effects the price.

    A licensed carpenter?

Qualified chippys don't get much more than $35 p/h

He could also get an apprentice to hang doors for less

An apprentice cannot subcontract in their own right. Is there a qualified tradesman on the site to supervise the apprentice?

No ********* wonder people complain that the industry is ********* when people think you can use an untrained goat to build multistorey buildings then blame the gummint for relaxing the qualification requirements. (rant off SNM)

Now you're just being pedantic, if you can't get an apprentice to hang an internal door the industry is ****ed and going backwards.

The thing is Optimus, you can't get an apprentice to quote out the job and provide all the relevant insurances and equipment to complete it. Therefore you hire a business, who would be charging at the low end $65 per hour, as noted by Scott - regardless of who hangs the door and what they get paid.

Your other option is to get a sole trader handyman who does cash in hand type stuff - these guys are capable and can be found as low as $40 ph but will take twice as long as a chippy who churns these out much more often, thus negating the savings or costing more long run.

The reality is you can roll up your sleeves and grab some tools or accept that not everything is as cheap as a bic lighter...

Yep - yep some of these blokes will perform a given task for a fraction of its market rate. I had one guy show up for a simple labouring job wearing a size 20 olive green Ambulance uniform who left early before the job was done to do a shift for his ambulance station :p;)

Looked elsewhere for temp labour after that one...

I’d be happy to get a contact for this if you can pass on the details (pm) to me as I need some walls straightened.

$35 per hour seems like a great deal.
