I’m curious, I wonder if this is one of the reasons the pm told us all yesterday to update our devices (knowing the the iOS update will install this on our phones). Also curious if Apple provides data from this option back to the government.

I don't think so. This is a phone upgrade only and this feature does not do anything without an installed app. There are so many features on your phone that are traceable if you are worried about that. Any "smart" phone, watch etc has lots of apps that are traceable. Anyway for the feature you asked about have a look at this Apple releases iOS 13.5 with COVID-19 contact tracing feature, Face ID improvements | ZDNet

Apparently it was developed in association with the husband of a Lib candidate for Canberra.

It hasn't been as successful as hoped. That could be because not enough people have downloaded it, or haven't activated it once downloaded, or it may have to do with the fifteen minute contact time required. Or it might not even work.

A mediocre App poorly rolled out.... Perhaps the government should have mandated it for anyone wanting benefits.... there’s a few million users already.

While Victoria has stopped using the controversial COVIDSafe app, it has proven extremely useful in NSW.

Since when did Victoria stop using the app???

I personally think the 15 minute timeframe within xx metres is useless. I have had it downloaded from the start but - to be honest - there is rarely anyone I'm that close to for the period of time other than immediate family.

So, if someone in the supermarket with covid sneezes 5m away, and I walk unknowingly through their sneeze cloud, the app won't work. Same with takeaway and Bunnings and pubs, ie, if someone went to the bar and stood shoulder to shoulder with someone with covid while they spent 5 minutes to order a beer, or the checkout guy at Bunnings who handled my goods and receipt ...

They had issues from get go, reported many times

Another problem when you dig deeper you find out that they did not get the numbers. I think what OP said about poor roll out and ongoing issues with the flawed app

My link points to countries that used various technical devices with success.
