Fair enough. Never turned Bluetooth on. Don't know how and can't be fussed trying to find out.

A good uptake of this app may be what it takes to relax the regulations.

Good Twitter thread from Australian IT security expert Troy Hunt (was also a member of Somersoft!):

His advice: it is safe to install and he has done so - steps you through it in the Twitter thread.

IIRC that model was only 2G and won't work in Oz.

My smart phone is 5 years old and it works fine.

Unless you have a smart phone which runs something other than Android or iOS

    Yes.

Australian livelihoods depend on Australians doing this, and it will help medical professionals control the trajectory of any outbreaks in the the virus, which could save lives.

That’s more than enough of a reason for me.

I hope Australians can see the bigger picture and do what’s needed.

The article above sums it up perfectly. Extract from the article below.

‘...At that point, the question is no longer about the app, but about the government. What’s required for that isn’t a privacy impact assessment but a power impact assessment.

A power impact assessment would examine this government and find it badly wanting in relation to the abuse of personal information.

We have downloaded the app as a family as it provides a benefit to us and our family esp. parents and grandparents. If we have been in contact with someone with the virus we would rather know sooner rather than later.

We use so many other apps that have bigger privacy concerns - google maps, Facebook, LinkedIn, games etc

I would have thought that anyone who wants to see restrictions lifted ASAP and businesses (both small and large) comes out of hibernation ASAP would install the app.

And, as an additional benefit, it might even save lives.

I would have thought every person in Australia would want that.

Sounds like I could be wrong.

Yes, but which of their sugar caves has the least mobile reception? (or it does not matter - we can just air drop it?

    I can't help but wonder...

Apparently the app only stores contacts where two people are in close proximity for 15 minutes or more.

If you're socially isolating yourself, how many times have you been in close proximity to another person other than those you live with for that amount of time?

I'm certain I can name every time where this would apply for the last 6 weeks. If I caught the virus it would likely be from touching a surface at somewhere that another person had previously infected. This app has no way of recording that type of infection.

In the last 6 weeks I've been to the supermarket about twice a week, I don't interact with anyone and keep my distance. In and out in less than 15 minutes. I have been to the blood bank twice to donate. My temperature was taken at the door, everyone coming in is registered and easily traceable. Did some gardening near a few neighbours for about an hour one Saturday, I can name everyone involved.

There are people who are working with others and legitimately interacting far more than I am. There are people who are breaking the social isolation rules unnecessarily. There's an excellent argument that these people should use a contact tracing app.

Yup for people like you there is little benefit to having the app but presumably as time progresses it may change for you. It will be great for people who use public transport, work in locations where they don't know everyone, universities/tafe (when they are allowed back), sports (when they are allowed again) etc etc

Even if there's some chance that the App would tell me that I'd been in contact with an infected person, I'd like to use it. Yes, it's certainly not foolproof. But I could get notified, and that could be a lifesaver. I'm in a vulnerable group, my wife more so.
