Plumber replaced the garden tap as it needed a new washer.

The problem washers vs flexible hoses is when flexible hoses fail, they can do massive damage to your house. Washers, not so much.

They are a maintenance item like brake pads on your car. Inspect them when necessary and replace when needed... just like your brake pads!

When brake pad fail, the result can be catastrophic. That's why we have them checked and replaced when required.

Unlike many household items that just cease to work, suffer from wear and tear or stop doing what they were intended to do, it does not result in the uncontrolled release of pressurised water of almost unlimited supply in an uncontained and confined area.
At least when tap washers wear out it is generally only in small quantities and will go straight into the basin.
