That is true, but doesn't explain why western burbs north side are more desirable than western burbs southside - equal distance from the river.

Maybe it is dependent on which way the wind blows?

That explains why QLD is better than NSW :) :).

I think you're on the money here. The inner city and beachside locations are desirable. Australia's big coastal cities have expanded west away from those areas. In other areas the undesirable parts of the city are different e.g. in Canberra it's simply the outer suburbs in all directions. In Brisbane there are low socio-economic stretches north, south etc.

That's easily explained. The entire north side is better than the south, Wylie's suburb excluded.

When we walked the dogs on Saturday afternoon, we didn't even take Ellejay and her Hubby into the new sections to show off the better parts. We all declined going up to the tower later to watch fireworks. That is where the truly awesome homes are. We live down on the lower hill with all the plain homes..

Melbourne: To the West of Melbourne were the docks. The North West saw the development of slums in places such as the north of the Hoddle Grid and Carlton with the influx of settlers from The Gold Rush. To the South and on the other side of the river (Southbank) industry was established. This left the East of Melbourne for all those with cash to buy land and build fancy houses.

Thus St Kilda and Port Melb were traditionally working class as they were near industry, the slums along with public housing continued to push north and west with Brunswick, Footscray, Fitzroy and working class manufacturing jobs followed in these areas. Wealthy people then bought large blocks of land in the 1880's land boom around Toorak further to the East up stream of the Yarra.

Demographics in melb have largely followed this geographic trend

Great points @Beelzebub - likewise Sydney inner east (Potts Point, Woolloomooloo, Kings Cross, Redfern) were slums, the Rocks/Pyrmont all slums. All of the innerwest 'shams were worker housing with the odd manor house. Eastern subs and west (Ashfield/Burwood/Strathfield) had more freestanding houses for the 'rich'.

North Shore - who'd want to live there? It was relatively inaccessible except by punt.

Some NSW towns have the West as more desireable.

What about Perth ? Is the East the poorer area ?

What about Darwin ? The South....or the North in Adelaide
