    Just wondering,

why is it that the western side of town is vritually 99.9% the worst side of town?

surely there must be towns where the east is geographically far worse than the west and hence the people who live there make it the crappier side of town??

surely there must be a reason?

If you are on the east coast, it's further from ocean. And the ocean is desirable.
In Sydney, the city is on the east side. So if you live in the West, it's much more of a commute.
Brisbane, I am sure it gets much hotter and colder in the west (think Ipswich), but in the east the water keeps the temperature constantly nicer.

Ditto Sydney - Penrith. It just gets very hot and cold.
Melbourne - I'm not so sure... Maybe a historical reason?
Perth and Adelaide have their coasts to the West, but their populations are smaller. Strange that the better parts of Adelaide are to the East... I can only put that down to the location of the airport and land geography?

Because apart from WA the west is further from the sea. Closer to the sea the more desirable????

hmmm, so by that, in inland WA cities, the crappier side must be the east????

In the northern hemisphere the east end of cities are poorer as the cities sprung up in the Industrial Revolution - with the prevailing winds being westerlies, the industry & therefore coal pollution was located in the east e.g. London, Manchester, etc.

Australia is different as except for Canberra the cities were founded by the water & spread from there, mostly inland (often, but not always, less desirable,) & to the west in Sydney's case.

Darwin is weird, faces a different direction to what you'd expect - nice sunsets, tho.

Brisbane west, north side has very desirable areas. Bellbowrie, Kenmore, Indoorpilly, etc. - just follow the river I guess. That kind of dispels the west is undesirable meme.

Ok... Well, it's strange to me that the east in Adelaide is desired by many... Yes, there's heaps of nice places in the west, and I like that too (as long as it's not directly under the flight path). Personally I'd buy down the south. I like the coast, and it's affordable too. :D

The beach is to the west of Adelaide. We can tell who has not looked at a map lately.

    Totally agree.

All of Canberra is crappy as it is full of undesirables such as politicans and public servants :) :).

I know it is... And that was a bit of a mind blowing moment to think the coast is on the west... Just like when I tried to get on the trams in San Francisco and kept going to the wrong side of the street to catch them...

If suburbs are close to the river, they are cooler in summer and warmer in winter. Just like eastern suburbs on the east coast or western suburbs on the west coast being closer to the ocean.
