There is an interesting piece about the Don in a NY Time Article - What's he Really Worth?

Forbes put Don at a worth of $200M in 1982 and $4.1B in 2014. If he put that $200M into the S&P500 (+ Dividends), he'd probably be over the $4.1B

Trump is rich because his parents were rich.

He's not actually all that successful at making money.

Yep, Trump inherited his wealth and has done his best to try and lose it since, he's matched the market at best and greatly underperformed it on more conservative estimates.

Not exactly the kind of guy that's path to wealth is relevant to anyone but the .00001% who can inherit a few hundred million at a young age.

Yes, he did inherit his money. And yes, his net worth would have been higher if he'd put all his money into the stock exchange. However, he has spent like there's no tomorrow. Without that profligate spending may well have vastly outperformed other investments.

I'm not defending him btw. I don't like him personally.

would you rather he be like paris hilton and contribute bugger all ...or do something with what he has been given and create something that has hired thousands of people and contributed to some form of economic activity. I would give him some credit for that...he didnt just take the easy way and sit around sailing in the Hamptons etc...although i too personally dislike him.

You could make a case that Paris Hilton has been more successful than Trump in business. She inherited only $5m and is worth 20x that in less than 10 years.

You certainly could have picked someone better as the comparison, Hilton is actually a pretty successful businesswoman.

yes she has made a ton of money via perfumes, handbags , dingbat reality shows and club promotions/ marketing wetc and other business ventures. Does not mean she has produced to society as much as trump has...just because she has earned more money.

Well, I have sold everything except one IP - cashed in and sitting on a pile of cash - waiting. What about you, are you sure that you'll be able to get out in time and not lose much?
    I'm not so sure... :)

No, I'm not certain, you can never be 100% safe when you go all out hardcore for your dreams, but the way I have my portfolio at the moment, its more than probable that if there was a complete massive crash across the entire country in every market, say 50% plus, I will be OK and can hold on.

What kind of company you are talking about?

I'm sure there are some on the forum who are quite well off, financially speaking. :)

Of course they don't mention that. In America they're all 'self-made'. Donald's daddy gives him $5 million to start off with, but because he's managed to increase that figure many multitudes he's 'self-made'.

Edit- Not sure how much he inherited but it's a common theme in America.

Yep, the lowest estimate is $40m, which in modern terms would be the equivalent of $430m.

I'm sure there are a lot of successful people on this forum. Just giving Barnes a compliment.
I know he is cashed up because I sold all his Adelaide properties for him and I know he had others too elsewhere.

Great position to be in, not competing with anyone else but great financial position to be in.
