Doing something you love is not working. So if you love your work why retire? If your doing something you hate and continue doing it, you may need assistance, not retirement.

Or Terry....they are smart. I think people are going to be very surprised how long they live, if you are in your 50's today when you were born......no heart transplants/valve bypass etc, the pace of medical development CANNOT be understated.

If you are 50 today.....you are most likely going to make it to 90 (possibly 100......with a slight chance of much much much longer).

So if you are 50 and have a few million in the bank......giddyup as its not enough and retirement will catch you before you think it will.

What lame reasons! Let's call a spade a spade shall we?:p

Most people continue to work because they love money...they love to see their bank balances go up:rolleyes:

All your reasons above about people working because they still love their work...boredom...self actualization blah blah blah...

The real acid test is this....if they are NOT PAID , will they still continue to WORK?

Footnote: a lot of these people who continue to want to amass riches ..dig deeper and somewhere in their childhood, psyche , background ...there is a story of poverty/deprivation...

One of my greatest joys as a parent has been seeing my kids grow up, go to uni, go on to worthwhile careers and establish their own homes and families.

And each stand on their own two feet.

We have enough to see us out in comfort, and they will get anything left over. It will probably be a nice little boost for them, but luckily for us they really don't need it.

It's one thing to love your work and / or keep accumulating more and more wealth but unfortunately in many cases it's at the expense of health, family and friends.

Time passes by all too quickly so make choices now and in the future so that when the day comes to depart this life you have no regrets.

That's me. Since I retired nearly 6 years ago, I have offered many part-time and full-time jobs.

The only ones I have accepted are the ones where I don't get paid.

My next gig of 4 hours is next Monday and I will paid zip.

    I love my work.

I know people that just love to complain and whinge - they get positive enjoyment from it! If they didn't work, they won't have anyone to share their complaints with.

Other complain for legit reasons - where they see things in the business where they work where things truly could be improved.

    You missed the biggest expense
    Maintenance and upkeep
Two story house, salt in the air
Scaffolds, safety barriers, tradies over charging due to location
People with these houses need very deep pockets.

People are happiest when they are creating and growing.

Buying real estate TO retire is fear based..

I can understand people working well after the ability to retire because they love their job/work - I know several people who are like that - but to be doing it when you hate the job??? o_O

Or they love what they do - think of all the famous sportspeople and musicians for example - why do you think Mick Jagger would rather be attending a concert or giving one?

I work at an investment bank in the US - financials were released a few months back and in the disclosures most of the execs have a few mill in shares, with each share worth $50+ - they could leave at any time - but what would they do? The cut throat corporate atmosphere is a lot different to lying on a beach in the Carribean with a drink in your hand... :)
