It is coincidence that Melb cup coming however my post is not related (100%) to that...I have always fascinated to horse and recently I did a 2 hour horse ridding tour around Tamworth that have increased my love for them and now looking for info...

I have geard that one can invest in a horse as a share and pay for expenses and also take part of winnings.

Anyone here owns a horse for fun or as an investment?

It is big responsibility with vet bills etc...

I understand. I used to take riding lessons both in Scone and a couple of places in the Southern Highlands. So I understand the mania. But horse owners convinced me they are a beautiful folly.
Edited to say despite all the dressage lessons I still ride like a sack of potatoes

I’ve done a little bit of horse riding. The first few time I didn’t like it because the horse was stubborn and kept eating grass.

Then I rode ex racing horses and what a difference. They were like driving a sports car. So fast and responsive.

I have properties on acreage that is really part of my farm and a lot of prospective tenants think they are going to be able to have a horse as some sort of bonus! We call them paddock ****ers because that is what they will do if you let them. Also I see them generally as a money black hole and a fast way to the poor house.

I’ve got a share in a local horse.

It’s never going to make me rich but it’s good fun.

Normally you can buy whatever share you like and then you pay monthly training fees.

You get your percentage of winnings straight into your account.

My BIL owned a share in a race horse for a while. It was a money pit, somewhat like owning a boat. It it is a winner that is different of course.

If one buys a share that means its a professional racing horse so uou don't get to ride?

Imagine having a share for Winx ;)

@Darwin55 - can you share the ongoing training fee and winning shares or is it confidential? If it is - rough eatimates will do...

I think they are beautiful follies that the wealthy can indulge in. But usually, the wealthy also hate to waste money so feel a little sheepish sometimes about such things but honestly admit their sinful pleasures. Cars are in this same category. Art it's hard as often you can make money on that.

To be fair, this was more of an excuse to drink beer at regional race days and have a laugh, no expectation of a return and expectations were not exceeded !

Tamworth is famous for cutting horses. That means horses that know how to work cattle. I saw some excellent trainers there for that. Oh and in the Southern Highlands they also play horsie polo as well as having excellent dressage and riding schools. These days I'm more into riding wild horses in Georgia (Europe not America state)

erhmagahd you sound like you are on the Sunday night tipple:p, I understand the madness. Somewhere in Scone there are amazing stables built by a sheikh that has invested there, forget where but wow! Ha ha I sound so posh and horsey but definitely not, just they are beautiful fascinating creatures. Nice to know you!

... what happens to race horses after they are no longer a money making concern?

What you do is your business, your choice, but I just wont go to races or be a part of this Culture.

    Same as grey hound racing

I just dont get any joy from this. My choice
