The windows are not defective... just old and not compliant with current building code requirements. This would not have come up on pre-purchase inspection from 4 years ago. This issue has only come up because the child safety window locks law coming into effect this yr- and firms that fit this are saying that once they fit the locks, they need to be able to certify that the windows comply with the new rules and that they are liable for the whole thing. They are saying that unless the windows are changed to current glazing standard, they won't do the job....

This may not be isolated to our strata building. Others may have similar story. It is a pretty poorly thought out new law.... our balcony that is not enclosed is probably even less safe - a child can climb over and jump out in theory.... so surely an enclosed balcony (without child safety lock) must be safer but we need to pay to upgrade the old balcony enclosures but leave the open balconies untouched.
